On tap in Haast. Black but not pitch black, hints of brown. Little soft head. Roasty nose, but not extreme. Hints of liquorice in the taste, but altogether surprisingly light and refreshing. As others have mentioned, definitely sessionable.

330ml bottle. Dark brown colour with average, frothy, diminishing, minimally lacing, beige head. Dark malty aroma, a touch of roast and grass, hints of chocolate. Taste is minimally sweet dark malty, a touch of milk chocolate and cappuccino, minimally roasty and bitter hoppy finish.

330ml Bottle: best before the end of Oct 2012, whoops. Poured into a Westvleteren chalice on 7th Dec 2012, a bit late! Looked impressive: lovely dark body with a deep tan head of foam (well for 60 seconds anyway). Initial aroma leans towards a Stout maltiness smell and mild chocolate notes waft through the air: good for a Black Lager. The taste is also Stoutish, but with the lager crispness reminding you this isn’t at ale based beer. Those aforementioned chocolate notes can be found it the taste as well as in the nose along with slightly burnt caramel flavour. A lot better than I thought it would be and could well be my highest scoring beer of this style so far.

(Bottle) Appears black, but is very dark ruby, with a short lived beige head. Aroma is hints of chocolate and raisins. Medium body and medium carbonation. Flavour is simple and light starting with some dark roast malt and finishing with some bitterness. It’s an easy drinking dark beer; pleasant enough but disappointing - deserving of faint praise.

This beer is a bit like a St Kilda grand final appearance. Quite engaging, but with a weak ending. I get lots of malt on the nose, but not a lot else. There’s chocolate and coffee in the taste and it’s nice over the front of the tongue, but that there’s that dissatisfying watery finish.
