This is a classic beer made with special malts and raw materials that produce its amber color, as well as its body and rather dry, light character that distinguishes it from other dark beers. In contrast to the general perception that traditional dark beers are bitter and “heavy,” Bavaria Dark has very different characteristics, due to its hops content. Bavaria Dark was launched in 2001.

Can from TBone, thanks! Dark brown color. Malty caramelly aroma. Grainy sweetish caramelly flavor with apple. Somewhat thin and sticky, but not unpleasant.

350 ml tall can purchased in downtown Limon, Costa Rica. Pours a clear dark mahogany color with a large, tight khaki head and excellent retention. Decent lacing. Malty nose. Tastes like a mix of pale malts, dark malts and caramel malts. All of the flavors are muted, but they work well together. Smooth and clean. Not much of a Schwarzbier, but still enjoyable.

Bottle poured. Much thanks to my Dad for constantly thinking of me while on travel. Pours exactly like a cola. Red tinted brown color with a soda fizz head. Twist off cap too. Had to taste this to be sure it wasn’t soda. Malty aroma with metallic notes. Flavor is light and smooth up front, but a metallic hit towards the end. Bold malts. Actually drinks pretty decent. Better than what I have learned to expect from island dark beers.

Lots of chocolate malt and relatively smooth body for a mainstream beer. Bananas and unknown chemicals dominate the mouth. Better than expected.

A clear reddish brown dunkel with a thin mocha head. In aroma, light sweet nutty malt with light grassy hops. In mouth, a nutty crisp malt with light caramel and chalky character, boring. Can from Auto Mercado San Jose.

Bottled in Guacimal, Costa Rica. Dark brown, mid sized beige head. Fruity buttery nose. Medium bodied with clean, rounded mouthfeel. Soap, overripe fruits, some caramel. Low bitterness. Boring pale lager with some black malt for colouring?
