This is a classic beer made with special malts and raw materials that produce its amber color, as well as its body and rather dry, light character that distinguishes it from other dark beers. In contrast to the general perception that traditional dark beers are bitter and “heavy,” Bavaria Dark has very different characteristics, due to its hops content. Bavaria Dark was launched in 2001.

Bottled in Guacimal, Costa Rica. Dark brown, mid sized beige head. Fruity buttery nose. Medium bodied with clean, rounded mouthfeel. Soap, overripe fruits, some caramel. Low bitterness. Boring pale lager with some black malt for colouring?

Canned, 0.35l. Clear dark brown color with medium frothy brownish head and average visible carbonation. Aroma of grassy hops, mildly toasted malt, light coffee and subtle chocolate. Taste starts with sweet toasted malt, then followed by mild caramel and finished with mild bitterness and some spiciness. Light to medium body, slick texture and soft carbonation in palate. It’s not the top-notch, but so far one of the best Costa Rican beers (I haven’t had such luck to come across Bri Bri and Cartago micro brews)...

Wow, this is a rough one. Almost worse than the lagers I just had in San Jose. Almost. Just pounding this bad as quickly as I can by the hostel pool, though it may soon follow its friends iby being poured into the palm garden beside my pool recliner. Bottle.

Can from Costa Rica. [Shared by Arve. Thanks!] Pours clear reddish brown with a small off-white head. Light aroma with hints of roasted malt and caramel. Sweet and watery, with a hint of raisins. Drinkable, but doesn’t taste much.

No aroma on this beer with is surprising for the dark malts. Very thin mouthfeel and again the dark malt does not factor in the flavor.

Bottle: Poured a clear black color lager with a small bubbly head with minimal retention. Aroma of light sweet notes with not much else noticeable. Taste is also a balanced mix between light sweet undertones and a watery finish. Body is OK for style with medium carbonation. I have a feeling this is the regular lager with some kind of colouring agent thrown in there.

12oz can brought back from CR by my wife
Appearance: Dark copper/brown with a small beige head that dissipates quickly, no lacing
Aroma: Dark malts, caramel, toffee
Taste: Toasted malts, caramel with some hop bitterness in the finish
A nice change from the usual pale lagers in CR. Nice beer, easy drinkability.

From the can. Sweet caramel aromas. Slightly sour caramel upfront turning to a dry lasting thin finish. Gets more unpleasant as it warms.
