Strongish ale matured on sherry-soaked oak chips, another one in this special series (‘Nostalgia’) created by Kompel and intended to commemorate the history of the Belgian coalmining industry. Snow white, thick and frothy, cobweb-lacing, stable head, initially clear orange-glowing deep ‘old gold’ robe with visible fizz, misty further on. Aroma of dried peach, baked banana, candied orange peel, a touch of dry sherry is indeed noticeable, hard caramel, some oak wood indeed but not very vanillin-forward (or at least less than I was hoping for), dried tomatoes, field flowers, bergamot, calvados, old rusk, dust, burnt rubber. Sweet onset, red apple and apricot notes, some pear or pineapple perhaps, softish carb, smooth body; caramelly malt core with peanutty edges, diluted with white candi syrup and only softly bittered by a herbal hop character. Dried fruit sweetishness lingers and connects well with the sherry element, which becomes more prominent after swallowing. Some rooty bitterness then eventually does linger at the back, highlighted by a touch of ‘jenever’-like alcohol; some woodiness is there, but remains subtle. Sweet and rather crude Belgian pimped with a subtle, but admittedly flattering sherry and oak element. Passes.

Fles gedeeld door Roelzie. Het is een oranje bruin bier met een volle beige schuim. Het heeft een aroma van mout en bloemen. De smaak is vol moutig, zacht zoet en fruitig met een hint van eik.

Dark gold to copper colour. Aroma of malt, candy and Belgian yeast. Plenty of malt in the flavour. Also a touch of dried fruit. It really dries out, nice finish. Just lacks a bit of depth.

Goudkleurig bier met schuim. Smaak is bitter hoppig en kruidig met iets van citrus, wat druif en een heel klein beetje sherry.
