A decadent beer with roasted coconut flakes, licorice, cherry bark & vanilla on top of a rich imperial stout aged in whiskey barrels. Enjoy this first variant of The Abyss in a 4-pack. Drink one, share one, and age a couple for later!

Abyss, one of my favorite imperial stouts. And coconut I like a lot as an adjunct. This might be all right. I have a 12 oz bottle that I acquired from D&Q - The Beer Station in Houston earlier in the summer. And I have a globe glass out to receive the pour, a deep, dark brown with a minuscule rim of light tan foam. The smell is a basic imperial stout scent with a small whiff of coconut showing up. The taste builds considerably on the nose with a healthy amount of whiskey, chocolate, grain, vanilla, roast, wood and enough coconut to be noticed. I would have appreciated more. Significantly sweet, a little bitter and quite dense. A rather good imperial stout, might have been better.

12oz bottle. Beastly sweet, boozy, warm. Leans into the whiskey notes, the coconut is pretty mild and not that discernable. The adjuncts are complementary flavorwise, and don't dominate the way the barrel does. Chunky, rich, full bodied. Good.

Very rich. Sharp roast, coconut, dark chocolate and coffee. Oily black pour with great retaining mocha head and good lacing. A little coffee. Nice variant on the mainstay. Bittersweet finish, but mostly bitter. Thick creamy consistency. Bottle.

Bottle. Black with a 1/2cm brown head that never disappears. Smells mostly stouty with the additions and treatments nuances rather than main players - the coconut and the vanilla could just be oak. Smooth, slightly oily texture with lowish carbonation. Lots of chocolate (a mix of milk and plain), firm but not acrid roast, gentle coconut, more prominent vanilla, a mere breath of whiskey. Bitterness at the end really creeps up. And so, after a time, does the coconut. Bottle says this is 14.3% ABV, so I guess it holds its alcohol pretty well too. Adds some worthwhile things but doesn't mess much with what makes the original good.

Bottle from The Gull, North Vancouver
Dark brown colour, near black. Aroma of dark chocolate, little tar. Good body; definitively playing with the roasted malts and the tar, light residual sweetness; toasted nuts, a bit salty; I wouldn't necessarily think of coconut.
Very solid Imperial Stout, well brewed.

Poured from 355mL bottle (pkg 04/21/22). Black with small beige head. Light wood, chocolate, mild coconut and vanilla, light whiskey barrel. Wish it had more coconut. About on par with what I remember of the original Abyss (via my 2016 rating of the 2014 vintage). Enjoyable, a touch hot.

Bottle from Livonia Liquor. Pours a pitch black with a finger of brown head that lingers. Big dark chocolate, bourbon and coconut aromas. Coconut and cacao nib dominate the palate. Oak, vanilla, coconut and cacao on the finish. Excellent!

12oz @ π‘ Appearance: very dark brown with a dark beige head. Aroma: roasted malts, whiskey, chocolate, some coconut. Taste: lots of whiskey and roasted malts, not much of coconut, moderately sweet. Finishes with roasted malt bitterness. Overall: pretty good, especially for the price.

12oz bottle. Pours black with fizzy tan head that settles quickly. Aromas of kalhua (alcohol), vanilla, light coconut and slick toasted malts. Flavors of coconut, hazelnuts, licorice, dark chocolate, oily malts and alcohol. Flavors and malts are good, but not really up to the alcohol, especially as the coconut is bitter. Or maybe thatβs the barkβ¦

12 oz. bottle, pours jet black with a small tan head. Aroma is very complex and deep, with lots of roasted coconut, leather, licorice, gentle vanilla, and deep whiskey barrels. Flavour is rich and complex, with plenty of roasted malt, leather, some cherry bark, a little licorice, and deep whiskey barrels. The coconut is fairly minor and just adds minor accentuation. This is basically the same as the regular Abyss we all know and love, with only the subtlest differences. And that's fine with me because The Abyss is a classic, as is this version.
