For our Aecht Schlenkerla Erle black lager we use a very special smoked malt. This is not dried over beech wood fire, as is usually the case, but over fire made of alder wood. The alder smoked malt brings a fine, complex smoky flavor to the beer – less strong and spicy than in our classic smoked beer. A high roasted malt content provides a pronounced roasted aroma and the dark, almost black color. At 4.2% abv, Aecht Schlenkerla Erle has slightly less alcohol, but is strong in flavor.

Bottle. Mitchell’s Wines. Clear deep chestnut. Solid beige foam. Nose has light ham smoke. Wood char. Dark fruit. Some bonfire toffee. Taste is semi sweet with some dryness. Easy drinking affair with rolling soft carbonation. Gets a little earthy and woody bitter on the finish.

Pours dark brown color with two fingers of creamy off-white head, excellent retention. Smoky woody and subtle earthy aroma. Well rounded sweet smokiness, light bacon and lightly bitter chocolate flavor. Mild biterness, less smoked than other Schlenkerla beers, but still do well balanced, and awsome. Super drinkable dark smoky Beer!

Bottle to lager glass.
Appearance: dark brown color with a three finger eggshell white foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some light sticky lace
Aroma: smoky woody meatiness - bold and up front; subtle sweet earthy tones, sweet ash, delicate cocoa powder, subtle umami
Flavor: blends all the prior noted aromas to a rounded sweet smokiness; super subtle aftertaste of smoked meats
Texture: light to medium bodied, some sessionability, smooth along my tongue; finishes semi-crisp and semi-dry.
Overall: an absolutely wonderful Rauchbier more than worthy of returning to.

kolor ciemnego brązu, pod światło ciemny bursztyn, klarowny, piana beżowa, średnio obfita, raczej trwała. zapach intensywny, przyjemny, wędzonka, zimny liściasty dym, karmel, lekkie toffi, spieczone chleby, gdzieś w tle nuty banana i kawy zbożowej. w smaku pełne, ale nie słodkie, słody karmelowe, przypiekane, toffi, ciasteczka, drożdżówka, wszystko nie za słodkie, wyraźna liściasta wędzonka, odrobina kakao i lekko kwaskowych nut palonych. goryczka umiarkowana, podpalana, karmelowa, wędzona. w ustach pełne, okrągłe, ale dość pijalne, kremowe. nasycenie wysokie

Huge thanks to WillemsUrenkel for that one! Bottle looks simple but really good. Beer in the glass with a nice head. Mild smokey aroma. Starts fine malty, roasty-smokey, not too intense. Shy bacon touch, some herbs as well. Some wood, mild bitter chocolate in the background. Finish wonderful balanced, fine soft smokey-malty notes. Really nice!

01/2026 Aromat dymny bardzo intensywny wędzona wędlina.
Bura piana lekko zamglone, brązowe
Nagazowanie duże, treściwość lekie, bez ostrości finisz trochę dymny i czekoladowy.
Smak trochę słodowe, i wędzonki lekkie, słodkie średnio goryczka niska
Ogólnie piwo w stylu dla mnie trochę takie bez sensu tylko ta dymnosc.

Bottle at the DC Beer August Share. Poured a deep brown-black with ruby highlights. Flavor was malty and roasty with a noticeable amount of smoke. I'm always on the fence about smoky beers, but these are some of the best examples.

0,5 l bottle. BB 01/2026. BLACK in the glass, nearly two finger beige head. Intensive malty with smoked ham and woody sweetness on the nose. Taste is more on the malty side, smoked malt and some smoked pork meat in the second row. Mid bitterness. Below average carbonation. Long lasting bitterness with hints of peat. Nice one.
