Schwarzbier (black lager) has been around since at least the 16th century and used to be more widespread than it is today. In the industrial revolution of the 19th century, it was almost displaced by mass-produced lighter beers. Only a few breweries preserved the beer style, and for about 30 years now it has been experiencing a renaissance.
For our Aecht Schlenkerla Erle black lager we use a very special smoked malt. This is not dried over beech wood fire, as is usually the case, but over fire made of alder wood. The alder smoked malt brings a fine, complex smoky flavor to the beer – less strong and spicy than in our classic smoked beer. A high roasted malt content provides a pronounced roasted aroma and the dark, almost black color. At 4.2% abv, Aecht Schlenkerla Erle has slightly less alcohol, but is strong in flavor.

Bottle 50 cl. Pours an opaque black with a solid, creamy and lacing beige head. Fat and greasy Bamberg smoke in the nose, tar - actually a little butter there as well. Light body, sweet roast and licorice, buttery with fat and greasy smoke. No real bitterness. 140924

Bottle from CBB. Smoky nose, bacon or Speck, smoked salmon, chocolate, caramel. Rich and lovely. Dark brown, almost black, with orange tints and a tall, off-white head. Slightly sweet, lightly roasty flavor with nice smoke. Touch of acrid roasted malts. Body medium to full, low carbonation. A nice addition to the lineup, though I like it less than most of the others.

50 cl bottle @ Utsjoki, BBE Aroma has coffee, some toffee notes and smoke. Also ash. Feels a bit musty. Flavour has tar, smoke, some leathery vibes. Finishes woth peat and licorice. Rather good for this ABV.

500ml bottle from DeCicco’s in Armonk, NY. Nearly opaque dark brown color. Creamy tan head is finger-high. Huge smoked malt aroma. Flavor is smoky and roasty. Magnificently smooth mouthfeel. At 4.2% ABV, this is light in body, but not in flavor. Rich, maltiness is sweet and caramelly. Smoky from start to finish. Outstanding!

Mein Fazit: Am Sektor Rauchbier einfach Weltspitze! Am Sektor Schwarzbier ebenso!
