We knew we were overdue bringing a Munich Dunkel into the fold here but this beer is showing us exactly what we’ve been missing. One of Bavaria’s preeminent, classic lager styles, Dunkels (when done well) offer a deep and complex malt expression along with a relatively dry and beautifully clean finish. Malt selection / utilization, fermentation management and the hop profile all need to be in sync to hit that mark. It’s certainly a challenge but we’re beyond pleased with this first batch of Helmhold. We think we’ve done a favorite, historic style justice and know it won’t be long before we make it again.

Sampled from the tap at As Is. Pours a clear deep amber with a light brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has bread and some dark grains with just a bit of roast coming through. Flavor has earthy grains and bread with just a hint of dark cookie backing.

Canned 2/8/23, drunk 5/28/23. Large, moderately-well-retained, dark beige head atop a clear, dark mahogany body. Nose is excellent base malt with light specialty malt adding just a bit of roast and toast. Mild coffee with honey, graham cracker and strong minerality. Herbaceous hops but gentle. Clean and no alcohol noted. Malty, great textures with chocolate, vanilla, honey and good, balancing bitterness on the finish. Toasty, quite drying on the finish as well. Clean, no alcohol noted.
