Inspired by Flanders Reds of old, Goat Witch is a blended sour red ale combining 80% provision strength ‘young’ stock beer aged in steel, with around 20% ‘mature’ stock beer aged in ex-Heaven Hill bourbon oak barrels. The combination of old and young beers has produced a complex sweet and sour flavour profile with a subtle oak character.

This blended base was transferred onto 220g/l of 2022 harvest of Scottish Tayberries, sourced from farms located within 40 miles of the brewery. Tayberries are a cross between raspberries and blackberries. Expect complex raspberry aroma to dominate, with blackberry-forward characteristics on the palate.

Just a taster as it was the end of the barrel. Light claret coloured with a small bubbly off-white head and a tart fruit and wine/brandy aroma. Tart berry flavour, some vinous notes and a very dry finish.

Bottle via the online shop. Hazed deep red. Slim ring of white. Nose is very jammy although not immediately evident the fruit content. Some BA character. Vinous and softly tart. Doesn’t shout Flanders Red. Taste is tart with a nice fruity sweetness. Light acidity on the palate. Drinks super easy for the 7.1% (this is a 2025 version). Juicy tart finish. Lovely fruity sour but Flanders Red it ain’t.

375ml bottle from Sophie's Beer Stores. Unclear dark reddish appearance, white ring circle. Fruity tayberry nose, light flanders sour. Nice gripping flanders acidity producing a tangy swallow, moderate balanced acetic nature with well integrated tayberries bringing out a blossoming fruitiness. Excellent flanders red.
