Theakston Best Bitter is the leading session ale within the Theakston portfolio. When we refer to a ‘bitter’ beer, the term does not mean sour as in lemons, but dry as in ‘dry white wine’. So Best Bitter is a full bodied, dry beer.
We use five different hop varieties to make our Best Bitter forming a complex but subtle taste profile. The combination of dryness as generated by Target and Challenger hops, is balanced by sweetness created by the generous use of prime malting barley.

Cask at Hogarths, Stafford (not yet listed on RateBeer). Pours “bitter brown” with a medium sized off-white head and good lacing. There’s traditional hops in the aroma, plus some fruity hints. Old school hops again in the mouth alongside malts, nuts and autumn fruits. Later on some underlying caramel can be detected, plus hints of spices. Finish is somewhat sweet. This isn’t the most exciting beer in the world, but it’s the epitome of what a traditional bitter should be like – it looks and tastes like beer !

Beer is fine, but the pub is fantastic. Crying out for some better cask choices...

Drucken på cask på Bishop Arms Gustav, Malmö. En mycket lätt och snäll bitter som nog passar bäst om man är riktigt törstig en varm sommardag. Fin doft och smak med honung, säd, bröd och frukt. Ok

As far as classic Northern bitters go, this is pretty decent, and 20 years ago would’ve been hunted down: times change but it is still a quality beer, if perhaps a little bit bland. Pours a lovely creamy looking chestnut brown with a creamy white head, and a mellow aroma of sweet malt and dark fruits. The taste has that same malty fruit flavour to it, but with a slightly dry, and spicy/acidic bitterness to it, all delivered on a medium bodied and smooth mouthfeel.

On tap at Tap Milano. Slightly acidic, super light body, very english camra style. I wouldn’t get it again
