Theakston Best Bitter is the leading session ale within the Theakston portfolio. When we refer to a ‘bitter’ beer, the term does not mean sour as in lemons, but dry as in ‘dry white wine’. So Best Bitter is a full bodied, dry beer.
We use five different hop varieties to make our Best Bitter forming a complex but subtle taste profile. The combination of dryness as generated by Target and Challenger hops, is balanced by sweetness created by the generous use of prime malting barley.

Cask at Spa Hotel, Saltburn-by-the-Sea. Golden colour, white foam head and malt mash aroma. Taste is pale malt with some fruity hop bitterness. Light bodied, soft carbonation, dry bitter finish. OK

Draft at The Mitre in Blackpool. Medium amber with one finger creamy head. Nothing exciting here, quite the norm for the style. Pretty damn mild, and exceptionally creamy.

Light copper, average white head, pretty solid and leaving very nice lacing. Weak but clean aroma of light caramel, slight citrus, maybe floral hops. Taste follows the aroma with a nice and pretty refreshing citric presence that is definitely more vivid than in most bitters. Overall in very good bittersweet balance with the slightest bitter edge in the finish. Light bodied with classical delicate carbonation. Very easy and quite refreshing, not remarkable but pretty enjoyable.

Pint on tap at Strawberry Gardens Stockport. Very little nose, mild malt perhaps. Bronze colour with creamy head, no carbonation. Creamy mouthfeel, slight toasty malt flavour followed by more malt and a little hop bitterness. Standard session bitter.
