Theakston Best Bitter is the leading session ale within the Theakston portfolio. When we refer to a ‘bitter’ beer, the term does not mean sour as in lemons, but dry as in ‘dry white wine’. So Best Bitter is a full bodied, dry beer.
We use five different hop varieties to make our Best Bitter forming a complex but subtle taste profile. The combination of dryness as generated by Target and Challenger hops, is balanced by sweetness created by the generous use of prime malting barley.

Glowing golden ale with nice creamy head, doesn’t quite feel like a best bitter in taste or texture, but its light character is drinkable.

Cask at The Ship Tavern, London. Pours clear gold with a foamy, white head. Dry, crunchy toast malts on the nose with hints of dry leaves as well. Light sweet flavor, pretty dry with dull toast, wood, dry leaves, faint citrus and toasty sugar. Light bodied with average carbonation. Decent condition. Semi-dry to finish and lightly crisp, though also somewhat watery, with toasty and crunchy malts and dried leaves. Bland.

[Cask at the Old Board Inn, Hawes] Amber, thick white (sparkler) head. Fruity, with a hint of sulphur and some caramel malt in the slightly dusty, mildly bitter finish. A quite drinkable, if rather unexciting, standard bitter.

Cask. Clear deep golden with hardly any head. Lightly tart, fruity nose. Thin and watery, a little nutiness with a vague underlying tartness. No real bitterness. Extremely thin and bland. 220110

Cask at the Salisbury Pub, Manchester. Relatively pale. Astringently bitter, and a long lasting bitter finish. OK malt character, with caramel notes coming through. A round a mellow malt flavor. Still a rather unsatisfying beer, though interesting. Peppery hop bitterness lasted for about an hour.

Cask at GBBF 2009. The number of standard British beers I’d not rated sometimes frightened me. Clear gold with slightly yeasty aroma. Touch of tingly hop on end. a little dusty. Not too much malt, some caramel. Fine if erring on the bland side.
