1971 edition. When the cap eventually comes off, the appearance is pitch black, pretty much no head unsurprisingly, a few tan bubbles. Aroma- quite a lot- leathery malt, tar, big vinous and port wine notes, plums, dates, tannins, oak, booze, rich coffee, rum, dark chocolate, scorched malt. Taste- woody malt, tar, dark bitter chocolate, rich thick coffee, stewed dark fruits, dark rum, rich and plummy, blended sugary raisin, red wine is quite dominant. Lasting smoky sticky finish. Syrupy mouthfeel, very flat of course. Actually holds up pretty well for a near 50-year-old stout.

Vintage 1993. 170mL bottle, pours black with almost no head - just some brown head. Nose is massively oxidized, with heaps of soy sauce and faded bready malt. Flavour is hilariously oxidized but surprisingly inoffensive, with lots of faded English bready malt, soy sauce and cardboard. Not too horrifying, but nothing you'd want to drink at this point.

Bottle shared at Leightons place, 10/07/2017. Many thanks to Daniel for this one. 1977. A dark mahogany brown coloured pour with a tidy tan head. Aroma is rubber., cola cubes Brown sugars, mint. Earthy funk on the nose. Flavour is composed of soy salty, liquorice, meaty, ashy roast, brett tangy. . Palate is medium full, tangy, salty, moderate carbonation. Loads of umami. For the age this is great. Also had the 1973. thanks to Daniel 2023-06-22.

6 fl oz bottle from Wessex Brew, as Barclay’s Russian Imperial Stout, brewed in 1967. 3000th rating. Pours black in colour with no head. Aroma of roasted malt, molasses, chocolate & coffee, nutty. Taste is sweet, malty, roasted, molasses, caramel, dried fruity, leather, woody, tobacco, with chocolate & coffee notes and earthy bitterness. Silky smooth mouthfeel, full bodied, low soft carbonation, dry nutty boozy roasted bitter finish. Outstanding, amazingly drinkable for 50 years old.

Bottle shared during Scopey’s 10k - many thanks to Daniel. Vintage 1977. Pours deep brown-black with a creamy tan head. The aroma holds charred wood, scorched earth, iodine. Medium sweet flavor with nice meaty chocolate character, roast, prunes, raisins, plums. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Ashy roast in the finish, bitter charcoal, baking cocoa, scorched earth, leathery dark fruits, berries. Excellent.

Bottle big thanks to Dirty Danny at my 10K tasting. It pours pretty much black with a decent tan head. The nose is rich, umami, must, sweet dark fruit, fruit cake, dark chocolate, risen chocolate chew, marmite and light oxidised notes. The taste is rich, oily, bitter roast, dark chocolate, umami, chewiness, light ash, some oxidised notes, salted caramel, liquorice and marmite with a dry, rich finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Has aged pretty well actually. Not bad.

Bottle split at Scopey 10K, thanks to Daniel, 1977 vintage, 26/11/15. Light black with a decent tan covering, appearance has held up well. Nose is soy sauce, chocolate fondue, caramel, light cheese, musty dark fruit rinds. Taste comprises light cocoa powder, spice, umami, touch of soy, dark fruits, earthy, malt, fruit cake. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, drying close with a touch of alcohol. Decent for age.
