Trösten, translating to “comforting,” is a dark lager with rich notes of chestnut and toast. Carafa and smoked malts create rich flavors lingering on a surprisingly light, smooth finish. Brewed for the cold winter nights in Vermont, but can be enjoyed on any occasion.

Can from Appalachian for $2.38, reasonable. Sat in the fridge a few months. Looks to be born on 03/15/25, best by 12/25.

Pint glass at home. Dirty brown pour, filtered, ruby highlights. Nice cascade. Pale tan head.
Sweet oak, smokey ham nose. Nothing unexpected or extra.
Dusty fine texture, cocoa sweet, savory grilled veggies, herbal & astringent cherry bitter bite, salt, some walnut-y cotton mouth. Finishes a touch sweet is my only concern.

Delicious contrast.

Pour is a black with a bone white head. Aroma is caramel malt with a very slight smoke. Flavor is again a very roast caramel malt with a little bitter bakers chocolate and again a very slight smokiness on the back end. Not a bacon bomb by a long shot but more a pleasant smoke with some rich malt. Kind of a schwartzbier with just a hint of smoked malt thrown in there.

Draught from Blind Tiger. Poured dark etc. Almost more Portery than schwarzbier - kind of thick.

Can. Nutty malt aroma with notes of smoke, toasted malt, bread and caramel. Pours dark brown colored with a finger of tan head that has good retention and excellent lacing. Starts with nutty malt, bread and toasted malt flavors. Finishes smooth with caramel and smoke flavors. Delicious.

Can, best before 3/16/25, drunk 12/5/24. Dark. Clear. Small, light-tan head steadily to spotty cover. Gently smokey, bit of ash and woodsmoke, no bacon. Rich, lightly roasted malts with clean yeast and deep malts. Soft, malty, rich and properly attenuated. Good amount of bread, but not too much, not toasty or tannic. Lingering light chocolate, hazelnut, gentle, but appropriate hop bitterness and yeast.

12 ounce can. Barely translucent dark brown color. Large, frothy tan head. Roasted malt and smoky notes on the nose. Sweet roasty flavor upfront and more smokiness. This is an amalgamation of several beer styles. Schwarzbier, Smoked beer and Dark lager. There is inate complexity going down here. Hints of dark dried fruits, molasses, dark caramel and campfire. Quite a remarkable beer.
