Near black with a frothy tan head and roasted malt and a hint of treacle on the nose. Smooth, just a touch creamy, roasted malt, milk chocolate and dry coffee bitterness to finish things off.

A 440ml. can purchased online from Beautiful Beers while on a recent visit home, and drunk here in Taipei. Aroma: very rich, cafe au lait milk chocolate mix. Appearance: opaque cola, one finger tan head. Palate: light-bodied, oily and slightly tart, softish carbonation; finish is deep roast, rather abrupt. Taste: lightly sweet with prominent roasted notes, coffee trumps chocolate but does not overpower; the surprise sour hit is not unpleasant. This is really good.

Half cask at Crown & Kettle. Near black pour, filmy beige head, ring. Roasty aroma up front, big hit of bitterness. Taste is burnt toast, roasty, coffee with a tough of cola sweetness on the back end . Smooth but was expecting something richer from cask.

On tap at Ebenezer’s, Crewe. Pours almost black with a small foamy beige head and excellent lacing. There’s roasted malts and lactose in the aroma. In the mouth it is slightly sweet with roasted malts, oats, lactose chocolate and vanilla. Later on some hints of ginger come through as well. A little bitterness in the finish. This is quite nice – plenty of character.
