Bottle from Lekkerbier, St. Nicolaasga. Aroma is roasted malt with dark chocolate, caramel, notes of coffee and liquorice, touch of char and tobacco, and fruity hints. Flavour is medium sweet with a moderate to medium roasty bitterness. Body is above medium. A proper Baltic Porter.

Tap at the brewery. Nice. Roasty, smooth, coffee, bit of sweetness, vanilla, choc. Nice.

No obvious BB date. black color, small coffee colored head. smells earthy, spices, bit green herbal, some bitter chocolate, pepper, lightly leathery. light oxidation, nice smell. full body, light carbonation, slick mouthfeel. tastes of oxidation, some bitter chocolate, earthy, green herbal, pepper, spices, light lactose, light marzipan, bit nutty. finishes lightly roasty bitter with notes of green herbs, bitter chocolate and some spices. decent overall, some oxidation, not the best but quite drinkable.

Very dark brown pour - near pitch black - with a medium height dark tan head with poor retention. Notes of roasted coffee beans, cocoa, chocolate, cherries and sugar. Baltic porter by Gigantic in Oregon, from a 65 cl bomber. Medium thick, creamy, deep yellowish tan head with good edge retention and pillowy patches of foam in the middle; black colour, as good as opaque, with chestnut brown hue only visible on the edges under bright light. Interesting and pleasant, spicy and malty aroma of bitter chocolate, ’Haagse hopjes’, espresso, hint liquorish candy, natural ’haemoglobin’-like iron, home made caramel, Belgian chocolates, freshly ground black pepper corns, madera, brown rum, dry tree leaves, dried juniper berries, cloves, warm black olive, pecan nuts, hints of smoked / cured meat, roasted peanuts, leather, mocha, pipe tobacco. Soft sweetish onset, red berries and fig but restrained and balanced by the deep sourishness of roasted barley on the one hand and light cured meat-like umami flavors on the other hand; soft carbo (undercarbonated even for this style), very smooth and slick mouthfeel, even a bit on the thin side for an 8% ABV beer (due to the low carbonation). Thick nutty malts ensue filling the middle phase, with both a toffeeish sweetish and a toasted bitter edge, coming together in a more deeply roasted bitterness in the end, releasing some coffeeish and even very pleasantly mocha-like flavors and going down smoothly and oily, while a notable iron-like sensation remains, but feeling completely ’natural’, as in blood or spinach. Minerally accents linger in the background too, along with a dash of spicy hops supporting the roasted bitterness, a vaguely spicy accent (almost medicinal, not unlike in some of the classic Baltic porters actually) and, all the way in the end, some vague, rum-like, warming alcohol, which in all remains very well hidden. Lovely chocolatey and coffeeish malt flavors stay behind in the back of the mouth after swallowing. This beer achieves its goal very well: it has the deep nuttiness and coffee-like roasted bitterness of a Baltic porter along with the iron-like quality many of these beers, including the traditional ones, share. Same for the lack of fruity esters, though I still think this particular example is top-fermented, and the smooth, slick, oily mouthfeel, thicker than ’real’ porters and thinner than stouts of the same strength. Not quite up there with Smuttynose’s interpretation of this old and much-neglected Eastern European style, but more so because of the lack of carbonation than because of pure flavor. In any case recommended to porter afficionados.
