Brewed for JD Wetherspoon.

Robyn Guille has travelled to Batemans Brewery (Lincolnshire) to brew this tropical session stout for us. The aromas of tropical and citrus fruit lead to a smooth roasted malt flavour, with notes of chocolate and toffee, then a full-bodied, creamy and refreshing finish.

Hops: Amarillo, El Dorado

Cask at London & North Western (JCW), Birmingham. Pours black with decent beige top. Aroma of liquorice, blackcurrant and roast. Taste is roasty, hints of coffee, then a fruity berry in the finish. Light to mid-bodied, drying and a touch powdery but overall a good stout.

Cask @ Regal Moon, Rochdale. Very dark with a very light brown head. Floral-tropical infused stout, lowering its classic character but remaining a very decent brew. Dark and roasted malts are at their best in its nose.

Cask-conditioned at the Commercial Rooms (JDW), Bristol October 2023. Near black in colour, with a slight, tan, head. A toasty stout, with some dark fruit sweetness and touch of coffee in the background. Fine.

Cask at the Hope Tap, Reading (JDW). Dark brown with a beige head. Something medicinal and herbal in here competing against the malty chocolate behind. There's some walnut too, some blackcurrant, and a moderately bitter finish. Overall... it's not terrible, but no, it's not the beer for me. As seems to be generally the case with Bateman's brews.

Cask at Hedgeford Lodge, Hednesford (not listed in RateBeer - not even the town !). Pours almost black with a small cream head and good lacing. There’s roast malts and autumn fruits in the aroma. Roast malts againi in the mouth with a smooth and cramy texture, alongside lactose and hints of coffee initially. Later there are stone fruits and berries plus hints of toffee and chocolate. Finish is dry and fruity. This is an unusual and interesting beer – qite nice as well !

Cask handpull at The County Hotel JDW Ashford. Black beer lasting beige head. Charcoal chocolate. Some powdery feel. Decent enough. Not my sort of beer. Some liquorice. OK.
