Blended Barrel-Aged Ale
Madness & Civilization is a panorama of our barrel aging program—oak-aged beers that emerge from their individual silences to find structure and voice as a unified composition. This is the result of an unpredictable state of permanent happenstance—a dialogue with our evolving approach to blending that challenges convention and circumstance. Each release will include multiple threads and is likely to approximate the style of an imperial stout.
Eleventh in our ongoing series of experimental stout blends, this version of Madness and Civilization is constructed with a few barrels of two-year-old Damon (brewed with honey) and a larger quantity of an imperial stout brewed in honor of batch 1,000. Batch 1,000 (or 1k, as we refer to it), is a 33º American-style sweet imperial stout that spent more than a year in bourbon barrels. The beers were then married on organic Ecuadorian cacao nibs and organic Ethiopian coffee beans before packaging.

CBJ Sit-In. Dark glossy brown. Thin foamy beige head. Aroma has pungent booze ans a barrel edge. Flavourwise it has booze but the cacao is more restrained. Gloopy oily body. Long slightly astringent finish. Yeah

Bottle in NH. Picked up via trade. Pours black-brown with a frothy, beige head. Medium to big sweet flavour with rich coffee, layered chocolate, bourbon, burnt caramel, mild earthy bitterness, gateaux. Medium to full bodied, lightly oily, smooth, with fine carbonation. Mild warmth to finish, delicious rich chocolate, fudge, bourbon, raisins. Outstanding.

A dark imperial stout with a thin brown head. In aroma, sweet chocolate malt with loads of vanilla, coffee, dark fruits, molasses, alcohol warmth, very nice. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity chocolate malt with loads of vanilla and bourbon barrel notes, woody notes, alcohol warmth, light licorice, very nice. Bottle from Pushkinwow.

Bottle shared at Himmeriget, thanks to Jeppe/Jens - black with a small tan head. Sweet dark and light roasted malty with some lovely notes of coffee roast, some honey sweetness, subtle charred earthy malty, soft velvety mouthfeel, full body, sweet dark malty lingering finish. So smooth. Immense.

Thanks Virby44 for sharing! Taster showing dark brown with quickly dissipating latte colored foam. The nose shows intense notes of roasted malts, cacao nibs, dark chocolate, and light barrel on the background. The palate is well carbonated and medium bodied. Milk chocolate forward with cacao on the mid palate and a mocha bitterness on the finish.

500 ml bottle thanks to Adamchandler. Aroma is chocolate with honey, oak, spicy bourbon. Flavor has the same as aroma with the addition of anise, and a slight note of booze. Good but even from this series, not my near my top.

Pitch black, black oily, no head except a small tan line. Smells great. Little bit of vanilla. Cocoa, hott chocolate aroma. This is delicious. Alcohol burn, sweetness..lactose? Loads of vanilla and coconut. Nice lingering campfire cocoa finish. Lovely.

Pours a rather thin, oily black, with nothing really by way of head. Strong booze aroma--lots of bourbon--coupled with some oak, coffee, chocolate, dark fruit. Flavor follows. Again, there is quite a boozy-bourbon flavor permeating this. Also, dark fruit, chocolate, coffee, some licorice, oakiness. Very smooth. Definitely one to sip.
