Blended Barrel-Aged Ale
Madness & Civilization is a panorama of our barrel aging program—oak-aged beers that emerge from their individual silences to find structure and voice as a unified composition. This is the result of an unpredictable state of permanent happenstance—a dialogue with our evolving approach to blending that challenges convention and circumstance. Each release will include multiple threads and is likely to approximate the style of an imperial stout.
Eleventh in our ongoing series of experimental stout blends, this version of Madness and Civilization is constructed with a few barrels of two-year-old Damon (brewed with honey) and a larger quantity of an imperial stout brewed in honor of batch 1,000. Batch 1,000 (or 1k, as we refer to it), is a 33º American-style sweet imperial stout that spent more than a year in bourbon barrels. The beers were then married on organic Ecuadorian cacao nibs and organic Ethiopian coffee beans before packaging.

Bottle. Pours black with small tan head that lasts. The aroma is strong roast, cocoa, oak, bourbon. Thick body, chewy, roasted malt, dark chocolate, oak, boozy finish, very nice.

Bottle, by way of a trade. Cheers Joe. Nearly black. Thin, dense, leggy, pale tan head. Nose has chocolate truffle. Whisky soaked trousers. Working men’s club. Beer soaked ash tray. Taste is sweet and boozy. No let up from the stickiness. Absolutely no fucken idea what I’m in about. Does it matter? Ratebeer died recently. It’s all gone wrong. Fuck it. Great beer. Nobody gives a fuck.

Black colour, no head. Aroma of roasted malts, tar, spirit. Thick and oily mouthfeel, sweet, with strong dark caramel flavour, dark chocolate, some molasses, a bit salty, moderate Bourbon, touch of liquorice and coffee, warming feeling of alcohol.
Wonderful Imperial Stout.
