Can, 13.1%. Very dark brown with small head. Aroma is roasted malt, candy, liquorice, labre larver and caramel. Flavour is roasted malt, sweet, sticky, liquorice, labre larver, candy, little dark fruit and a little bitter.

Can from The Star & Garter, Bromley. Black pour with a tan head. Nutty strawberry jam aromas, whack of smoke. Dark chocolate strawberry flavours, more nuts, light smoky linger. Rich malty sweet booze laden finish. Certainly different.

Can at home. Pours black, nose is chocolate, toffee, peanuts, raspberry, taste is tart berries, sweet toffee, chocolate, nutty.

Can from HOTM. Black colour with a lasting tan head. Aroma and taste are bitter sweet roasted chocolate. Sweet jam and light nutty. Fairly subtle. Rich warming and smooth body. Not overly boozy.

330ml can from Beer Gonzo, Coventry. Poured a clear almost black colour with a short-lived, frothy tan head. The aroma is roasted malt, light peanut butter, light jelly babies. The flavour is strong liqourice bitter, light sweet, with a smooth, dry, roasty, ashtray, liqourice, warm boozy alcohol bitter palate. Over medium bodied with soft carbonation. As with the Scoundrel, I’m disappointed. This isn’t a great beer. The peanut butter and jelly are super subtle and only in the aroma, then after that it’s just liqourice and alcohol. This is a really unbalanced beer. If I only wanted to drink alcohol I’d buy hand sanitiser, It’s a whole lot cheaper. What’s gone wrong Emperor’s? Don’t believe in the high happy clapper ratings on Untappd! Cut back on the alcohol. It’s adding nothing to your beers and I was close to drain pouring this. An update: Well the following day I had a sample of the Kessel Run on draft at Ya Bard, Stratford on Avon and it was a completely different beer. The draft version was rich, oily and with plenty of flavours. The draft version is worthy of a 4.4. Avoid the cans!
