The eagle has landed. When you’re looking to let the good times roll, Wingman has your back. A maverick of a Session IPA, this is a smooth ride of mellow tropical fruits, piney notes and a sharp citrus aroma. Refreshing, infinitely drinkable and with a steady boozing altitude of 4.3%, you’ll want to keep Wingman by your side all night long. Prepare ground control. Refreshment incoming.

Can from Asda; clear light amber pour with a bubby white head, aroma has straw bales covered in orange juice, taste has hint of pine, light citrus, minimally bitter, weak malts, I could imagine having a session on this, crisp and inoffensive.

Typical 'new style' BrewDog, a generic SIPA which does not even disclose the hop varieties used - and widely available, as my sample comes from an Albert Heijn supermarket in Lokeren, Flanders. Thick and moussey, foamy, egg-white, membrane-lacing, dense, stable head on a crystal clear 'metallic' yellow-golden robe with one thin string of visible sparkling in the middle. Aroma of straw, dry old cardboard (so clearly too old at this point), very old crackers, dry 'herbes de Provençe', old dried grapefruit peel, overripe onion, old dusty white pepper, bread crust, hints of industrial pancakes, soap, damp earth and rubber. Crisp, clean onset, some basic pear- and peach-like fruitiness but restrainedly so, sweetish with a sourish edge enhanced by sharp, minerally, stingy carbonation; smooth body, medium full with generic pale malty middle, slick, cereally and sweetish. From the middle onwards things get drier and hoppier, with a leafy, grassy, bit wormwoody bittering, lasting for quite a while without drying everything; an aromatic touch of dried grapefruit peel and (more so) onion is added retronasally, but the luscious 'tropical' and 'piney' notes the brewery describes are all but absent - or, if they were ever present at all, must have faded by now. Ends dry and bitter but in a mild, gentle kind of way, while the malts, already feeble from the start, ingloriously fade away. A generic session IPA for the masses, filtered and cleaned to a macro brewery kind of level - this is apparently what BrewDog, which once rocked the sleepy European beer scene, has become in all those years...
