Beer has only been filtered since the end of the 19th century. While this practice increased the beer's shelf life back then, it's no longer necessary given today's hygiene standards. In the 1950s, this variety was marketed as "Kräusenbier" (Kräusen Beer) – and over time became known and popular as Zwickl.

A naturally cloudy, velvety pale ale, just like in our great-grandfather's day.

Back then, the brewmaster would take a sample from the tank using the so-called Zwickl tap to taste the beer before filtration. Zwickl thus comes directly from the lager cellar and is therefore also known as "Kellerbier" (cellar beer).

A naturally cloudy pale ale, from the cool depths of the lager cellar. Harmonious, with dynamic, fresh malt and hop aromas. A beer for sensual connoisseurs.

Reviewed from notes.
Bottle to mug.
Appearance: mild cloudy yellow color with a finger's worth of white foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some light lace
Aroma: bready to floral to subtle hay character - very mellow sweetness
Flavor: basically the same as the aroma in a sweet way; finishes sweet and malty
Texture: light to medium bodied; sessionable; good smoothness with nothing distracting; great carb level
Overall: nice Kellerbier I would return to.

Pours hazy gold into a stein. Bright white head with good retention recedes leaving trailing spiders. Caramel, bread and hay aromas. Crisp with sweet summer fruit, bread and hay front to back. Medium length hot golden syrup finish. Not sure why the scores are so low on this one...

Bottle 33 cl. Pours a cloudy, opaque golden with a lacing, white head. Refined, floral hop aroma. Medium body, sweet malts, floral hops and a decent, finishing bitterness. Very well crafted. 070925

Pour is a cloudy yellow with a large white head. Aroma is wet dough biscuit malt with a little lemon hop. Flavor is more crackery malt with more of an herbal hop on the back end. A German malty crusher for sure.

Not Hofbrau. This is a splendid little beer. I'd have another.
