Named after the Redoubt Fort in Harwich which overlooks the harbour channel, this is a robust stout. Jet black with a tan head, it is the perfect accompanimnet to game and cheese where the dry finish perfectly complements the strong flavours. Bitterness is provided by Pioneer and Pilgrim hops.

Note - previously brewed under Harwich Town.

500ml bottle [courtesy of Grumbo - cheers Graham!]. Almost opaque, darkest brown colour with ruby shimmer and average, frothy, moderately lasting, minimally lacing, beige head. Roasty and chocolately, dark malty aroma, notes of cocoa, dark chocolate, some coffee, light fruity overtones of dark fruit, plum, cherry. Taste is moderately bitter, roasty dark malty, hints of cocoa, dark chocolate, some coffee; lingering, bitter roasty finish. Watery texture, dry, minimally repellent palate, medium, prickly carbonation. Quite bitter and roasty - not bad.

Warning! Early amateur rating! Thinnish palate. Bitterish start and a smoky finish. Not much inbetween. Not fond of bitter/smoke combinations. 2.4

2nd February 2011
Opaque black stout, tidy tan head. Smooth and semi dry palate. Tangy dark malts with a little roast and a pronounced fruity tang. Bitter and roasty finish. Really quite fruity but the late bitterness is a bit much.
