I guess i got a good batch, like Hogtownharry. Hazy golden gueuze with a thin white head. Light chalky horseblanket aroma, a bit lactic, but overall pleasant. In mouth, a sweetish malt with light acidic points, a bit thin and simple, with some cherry notes. Not the real thing, but coming from Schoune, this is not a drainpour. Pleasing. Tasted with Capflu and Dumdum.

2005 750mL capped bottle from the generous Montreal crew, brought to me by Muzzlehatch. Sampled and then poured out on 2/18/06.
Pretty sad appearance. If there was a true refermentation through blending, as the bottle says, it certainly didn’t carbonate the beer. Dull, flat, peachy gold beer, with some light sediment on the bottom. The nose is heavily buttery, with light burnt pop corn dryness, rather sickening, with rotten cheese and a strong, bland, lightly sour wheat. Seems very heavily wheaty from the aroma, with musty yeast notes that are drowned out in butter and spoiled peaches. Flavor is fruity, yes, but it’s very unauthentic and laced with butter, cheese-flavored pop corn and a watery, oily, flat, loose body. Heavily oxidized. I do see some of the tropical fruits that David mentions, but they are oily and when combined with all of the butter and rotting cheese flavors, it just confuses things. Where is the brett, maybe there is some very light pediococcus giving some minor oily sourness? Probably just imagining things. Hell, they couldnt even get the lactobacillus in to this thing, seemingly, and that’s got to be more difficult to keep out of the beer than in. Didnt find any alcohol, on the positive side....It’s too bad, ma petite was, although not a gueuze, a well-made Belgian wit-like beer. The Torontoans ranking this beer near or on par with Cantillon and Drie Fonteinen is very frightening, even in better condition than this bottle, I can’t ever envision this beer being good. 3/1/2/1/3

Well, well, we meet again, La Spontanee.....I can’t say I’ve pined away the days waiting to try you again, but the nine years gone by have not been too bad to you. You’ve made peace with your diacetyl demons, which was your biggest problem and now drift on as a lightly carbonated, vaguely lambic-y, vaguely oude bruin-ish sour ale. Oxidation kept in check quite well, with no particular flaws or overly sweet/insipid flavors. Alcohol pretty well in-check and all-in-all, a very pleasant, drinkable beer, if very uneventful/unexciting. Rating is for this sample (I’ll pretend the fresh 2005 bottle never existed)....

Bottle: Poured a pale yellow color beer with a very small bubbly white head with no retention. Aroma of slightly sour with some farmhouse funkiness buried in the back. Taste is quite awful with a strong watery feel and some sourness but clearly not enough to call this a real gueuze. Carbonation is so low that I had to go back and convince myself that it was actually a gueuze. Body is also defiantly too thin for the style. The only reason I am not rating this beer any lower is that I can feel some (thought not enough) farmhouse funkyness, which make me think that there is something to do with this beer if the brewer has enough ability and willingness.
