The next iteration of our barrel aged coffee project is another special version of Broken Dream Breakfast Stout. We've aged green beans sourced by Tamp Culture and aged them in Rum barrels for around 6 months. The barrel aged coffee has then replaced the usual Sumatran we use in the beer.

Bottle from Speciaalbierpakket. Aroma is strong coffee with roasted malt, milk chocolate, coffee grounds, and soft notes of rum. Flavour is medium sweet with a moderate roasty bitter finish. Body is medium. Lots of coffee in this one, with the rum adding a subtle dimension. Very nice!

16/5/2024. Bottle shared by Colin, cheers! Pours clear black with a small frothy beige head. Aroma is coffee, roasted malt, nut, camp coffee, fruit, rum truffle. Medium plus sweetness and moderate bitterness. Medium body, waxy and oily, foamy carbonation. Sweet roasted coffee to finish. Enjoyable.

Bottle from Gedeelde Vreugde, Sint-Niklaas - many thanks, Anke! Best before: 22/9/18. Pours hazy black with a huge, foamy, dark beige head; slowly fizzing away. Aroma of coffee bean, mocha biscuit, chocolate powder, brown rum, rum-soaked raisin, toast, tobacco, beef jerky. Taste is medium malty sweet, quite fruity (dates, raisin) on a subtle caramelly & chocolatey base; bitter core of coffee roast, toast & wood, faint black pepper & jerky in the back with a sourish undertone. Dry, toasty, earthy hoppy finish, lingering coffee, wood, raisin & some warming brown rum-like alcohol. Medium body, slick-creamy texture, fizzy carbonation. Straightforward 'rum & coffee' Stout, perhaps a bit past its prime but I can't complain.

330ml bottle. Pours very dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma of sweet coffee and chocolate, hint of rum. Taste is sweet, dark chocolate, coffee, roast malts, dark fruit, faint coconut, again just a hint of rum, it's pretty subtle wouldn't have picked up it if it wasn't in the name, light bitter roasty finish. Medium bodied, soft carbonation. Great stout, would have liked to taste more rum.

330ml bottle. Jet black colour with average, thick, creamy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, beige to tan head. Roasty, dark malty aroma, notes of coffee, dark chocolate, rum overtones, rum background, a touch of coconut. Taste is moderately bitter, roasty dark malty, minimally tart, astringent notes of coffee, hints of rum; full body, smooth palate. Pure, original Broken Dream is such an excellent Stout - this variation doesn't do serious harm but isn't a real improvement neither.
