Smell of fruits, rye bread, a bit of smoke and licorice. Dark brown colour with mid-brown, large head. Watery and smoky to start with, a bit tar and licorice to be found in the finish. Wateriness also diminishes, finish is much heavier. Lazy palate. Medium bitter, lightly sweet. Less smoky than the Bamberg beers.

Wenig rauchiger Malzantrunk, bedingt röstig, harmonisch. Etwas säuerlich, heber werdend, angenehm ausgeglichen. Später deutlich milder, die Rauchigkeit ist komplett verschwunden. Nett. Danke an den Doppelbock für das Bier. 12/8/9/9/10/9

Cask at the Monks Retreat (JDW), Reading. This was a rather disappointing porter for me; pitch black in colour with a loose tan head, it missed the sparkle of colour I associate with a good porter; the aroma had some roasted malts and vague peat smoke, but lacked depth; the body was thin with some licorice flavour; leading to a gentle bitter finish with some milk chocolate. I was expecting far more evidence of the smoky character.

29th October 2008. Bottle in the Rake. Opaque black beer, pretty low carbonation. Smooth subtle chocolate and vanilla. A little smoke but not overwhelming, nicely judged. Minerally. Not bitter or dry.

bottle, pours a very dark brown, nearing black, with a medium dark tan head. Roasted malt, molassis, and an assertive hoppiness in the nose. Roasted malt and a bitter bakers chocolate kind of body, some hop bitterness and a little hint of smoke lingering in the finish. Light carbonation, the beer is silky smooth and medium in body. Good brew.
