The first in a series brewed to celebrate Manchester's brewing heritage and scene-changing contribution to the UK beer industry.

A robust yet refined stout featuring complex roasted malt flavours of berries, honeycomb, and liquorice

JW Lees first brewed their Stout, Manchester Star, in 1884. It’s an honour for us to be able to use their house yeast – a culture that’s thousands of generations old - to brew our own Stout as a nod to Star.

Turning our hands to the classics is our way of saying thanks to trailblazing breweries for the part they played in the rich history of British Brewing.

Panda thanks to Cloin. Not quite clear deep brown beer, small and short lived bubbly tan head. Light and semi dry palate, decent fine minerally carbonation. Thin dark malts but decent dark chocolate and coffee grounds. A little dark malt cream. Modest ripe fruits. Light finish. Tidy.

Keg draught at the Real Ale Classroom, Leicester. Very dark brown, opaque with a quickly dissipating tan head. Gritty dark malt aroma, some slate, some cooking chocolate, maybe salt plum on the edges. Sweet taste, chocolate to the nth degree, some earthy flavours, maybe a touch of liquorice. Big thick body, soft to medium carbonation. A fairly basic strong stout, but no less amazing for it.

16oz can pours an oily, leggy black with some beige head. Nose had malt and honey and molasses and treacle and some cocoa. Flavor has all the sweet stuff. Tootsie roll and molasses and cocoa and kahlua. Full bodied, sweet finish. Not bad, but not their best.

Tap at 73 Enid Street. An opaque black coloured pour with a lasting light tan head. Aroma is nice and robust roast, earthy, some charred earth, toast, fresh. Flavour is composed of semi sweet, rounded roast, roasted barley with some rounded sweetness, charred wood, cakey malts, spicy dried fruits in the finish. Lovely. Palate is semi sweet rounded, light spicy finish. Palate is lovely, semi sweet full, spicy, massaging carbonation. Really well done. Long lingering robust roast.
