Spekkoek (also called Spekuk or Kue lapis legit) is a very tasty and densely layered cake with spices from the Indonesian Archipelago. It is most likely a product of European pastry and Indonesian spices, developed in the colonial period. Today it remains a popular treat in both the Netherlands and Indonesia. More than half a decade ago we made Ikan-Ikan, an amber ale inspired by this delicacy. Surprisingly we are still asked about its return on events and festivals.
Ikan Besar revisits this idea, but this time around we introduced all those gorgeous aromatic spices to a bold and velvety stout, perfect for the dark winter months.

Smaak is zoetig, gebrand, droppig, bitterig. Zachte koolzuurprikkeling. Medium body.

Medium body. Drinkt veel te makkelijk. Lekker.

Can 33cl. @home poured into a pint glass. Pitch black, small creamy tan head, slowly dissipating, thin layer remains. Aroma roasted and sweet malts, vanilla, spices (cloves, cinnamon, aniseed), cocoa powder, coffee, aniseed, spekkoek. Taste above medium sweet and below medium bitter, malty, roast, dark chocolate, coffee groundings, vanilla, spices (cloves, cinnamon, aniseed), faint smoky notes. Full body, creamy texture, soft carbonation, lasting malty sweetbitter aftertaste, chocolate, roasty and ashy notes, Indonesian spices for sure but I don't taste the spekkoek, well-balanced and rich brew, very nice.

330ml can. Jet black colour with average to huge, thick, dense, creamy, moderately to mostly lasting, moderately lacing, tan head. Chocolately and slightly roasty, dark malty as well as herbal-spicy aroma, notes of dark chocolate, some coffee, notes of ginger, allspice, aniseed, a touch of liquorice, herbs. Taste is slightly bitter, roasty and slightly chocolately, minimally smoky, dark malty with subtle residual sweetness, additionally slightly spicy and minimally herbal, notes of dark chocolate, some coffee, hints of allspice, ginger, aniseed, a minimally herbal touch, smoky interludes, almost ashy overtones in the last third.
Creamy-oily texture, smooth and soft, minimally cloying palate, fine, dense, creamy carbonation.
Well crafted, good mouthfeel, not too flattering flavours, well controlled sweetness - pretty decent.

Can. Color: Black, brown head. Aroma: A lot of spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, clove), some roasted malt. Taste: Malty with strong spicy notes. Cloves, cinnamon and nutmag. Some roasted malt and hints of black coffee. Moderate sweet, moderate to over moderate bitterness. Just over medium body, below average carbonation. Indonesian spices at the finish. I believe the Kromme Haring Ikan-Ikan tasted more like Spekkoek than this new Ikan Besar. Ok Christmas time beer though.
