‘Brewing for Impact’ is the creation of Brooklyn Brewery’s multi-award winning Brewmaster, Garrett Oliver, and comes as he celebrates his 30th anniversary with the brewery. It has been created with Fonio, an ancient grain that has thrived in West Africa for over 5,000 years due to its drought resistance and ability to grow in nutrient-poor soil without fertilizers and pesticides

Bottle at home picked up from Thornbridge online. A clear pale gold yellow straw coloured pour with a lasting sticky white head. Aroma is nice floral citrus, pollen, grass, waxy citrus, melon balls, pear drops, summery hop garden. Flavour is composed of pale crisp grains, bready, floral hops, pollen, melon balls, lemon fizz, light chalk. Palate is a little tight, crisp, highish carbonation . Little savory cracker note in the finish. Nice summery hop pale ale.

Bottle at home in Hackney - picked up from the brewery online shop. Pours crystal clear, very pale yellow with a fluffy, white topping. Light sweet flavour with tame lemony hops, sweet pale bread, mellow grain husk, a little bitter hay. Light bodied with fine to average carbonation. Sweet and easy finish, nips of honeysuckle, pale biscuits, lemon rind. Basic but easy-drinking beer.

Gravity cask at the 33rd Ealing Beer Festival, 12/07/24. Pale golden yellow topped with a white head. Nose is tangerine, grass, floral notes, melon. Taste comprises orange zest, papaya, melon, grass, perfume. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, semi drying close splashed with mellow hop bitterness. Okay pale if running a little on the sweet side for my liking.

Cask half @ Salopian, the pub. Surprisingly pale in the glass, small white head. Aroma of unfamiliar grain, herb. Flavour profile sees this fonio come through well, though quite subtle, interesting flavour profile. Any more and I'm not sure it would work. Light hop bitterness. Interesting, definitely the only beer I can recall that uses this grain.

Cask at Petersgate Tap, Stockport. Pours a very pale straw with a sizable foamy off-white head and good lacing. Only a faint aroma – traces of grains and tropical fruits. In the mouth it is sweet and juicy but with some underlying bitterness. Flavours of tropical fruits, grassy hops, sme citrus and hints of lemon. Later on there are hints of honey and grapefruit as well, leading to a bitter pithy finish. It’s reasonable – nothing to write home about.

Half of cask. Pale in the glass and a really skunky nose. A slightly odd hop balance, bitter and sweet that leaves me with a vague thought of vomit, but I am sure that will pass. Real length, but I'm really not sure about this one... Anyway, the Rolling Stones are playing, I've survived another day at work and life is good.

Hazy gold with afrothy white head and subtle light malt and fruit on the nose. Sweet and fruity, hints of toffee and grapes bizarrely, but blends nicely with a sweet, dry finish
