A strong amber ale.
A fulfilling taste journey starting with warm fruity malts and, with time, moving satisfyingly slowly into an expanding hoppy bitterness.

Pours golden-amber, good white head. Sweet nose, caramel shines through, fruitiness. Tastes fruity with melanoid notes, cookies, caramelized malt, malt finish with a bitter accent. Decent Old Ale for relaxing after work.

500ml bottle purchased from Beers of Europe some time ago and drunk at home. Mid- to dark gold and clear with a small smattering of off-white head. Lots of caramel on the nose, lighter notes of raisin, orange rind and honey. Sweet taste at first, tempered by gentle bittering hops. More caramel, tamarind and grape in the finish. Light to medium body, medium carbonation. As magnificent as the men after whom it was named.

500ml bottle shared with Blackhaddock. Pours golden amber, good off-white head. Sweet nose, caramel shining through, continues to taste with fruity dried rind, caramelised malt, maltloaf finishing bitter. Decent old ale to finish a heavy night.

5th March 2024, last beer of a mega-tasting with Minutemat in my home bar. 500ml bottle: BBE September 2024, obtained from Beers of Europe. Golden orange body (no sediment left the bottle), clean looking, on top a decent off-white crown. Malty, semi-sweet front to the aroma and taste, some fruity (none citrus) notes with a fairly dry bitter finish.

Bottle. Branthill Farm ale shop probably. Pours slightly dreary. Looks dreary. Bit worty. Nettle leaf hoppage. Syrupy and a bit heavy. Weird sour funky thing running through. Loved it, tbh. It’s horrible bollocks, but enjoyable horrible bollocks.

Bottle split at Watford Tasting, thanks to Leighton, 11/03/22. Golden amber with an off white covering that thins to the edge. Nose is fruit cake, caramel, dried fruit rinds, spice. Taste comprises dusty fruits, brown bread, dark malts, spice, toffee, dates. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, drying close. Not bad.

Bottle shared in Watford - picked up from Pigs Ear. Pours mostly clear orange-gold with a modest, foamy white head. Medium sweet, notes of English yeast, sun-kissed pale bread, dried honey, a little hay. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Decent balance to finish, more dried biscuits, pale grains, nips of grass and lemon rind. Nice overall.
