Yes, from a bottle this stuff is very attractive in looks and smell. Malty choco smell and a big black pour. Taste is fairly mild black beer, easy going and refined. One of the better dark beers I’ve had lately. Yes, rather friendly and easy going, quite refreshing for a change. No really bitter rudeness in this one. Could drink a few of these, not bad overall beer drinken experience.

Bottle. Pours dark, dark brown with a large frothy brown head. Smells of roasted nuts and chocolates. Tastes of toasted bread, coffee, and nuts.

It pours a dark brown close to black and leaves a decent half inch white foamy head that immediately dies into the body. The smell is roasted malt, hops and coffee. The taste is bitter as the coffee and hops are taking precedence. The taste is bittersweet between the hops, coffee to the malts, comes through pretty nice. The palate is about a medium with nothing harsh on the tongue. It leaves a bitter and dry aftertaste and finish. Overall, this is a good beer for its style and its good for me, I’d come back to it.

12 ounce bottle, winter sampler, from Harris Teeter Barracks Charlottesville. Pours a clear dark brown color with a large frothy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of chocolate, roast and dusty notes. The taste is chocolate, roasted malts and a bitter roast finish. Mild hoppiness. Medium bodied. Simple, but quite nice.

12oz bottle. A lot of my palate grew from Saranac. I think they really nail moderate, medium bodied beers, this being a prime example. Really well balanced, quite a bit of depth. Caramel, brown chocolate, some sandy sandpaper dryness. Deliciously drinkable, and lots of flavor. Middle of the road sure, but most extreme breweries can’t nail a style, so this one earns bonus points. Really quite nice.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a huge foamy brown head that lingered and left decent lacing. The aroma was dryish, bitter and roasty. The flavor was dry, bitter and roasty with faint cocoa and cola. Medium length dry roasty cocoa finish. Medium body. Eh.
