Brewed with malted oats, and even malted rye, this is a traditional beer style without the roasted flavours normally associated with modern stouts.

Cask gravity at the Watford beer festival 2014. Oily black opaque pour with a fleeting head. Aroma is big and fresh coffee grounds, earthy and some milky choc. Flavour is smooth roast, stale coffee, bit of dark choc. Lingering coffee with a bit if berry fruit. Palate is milky, moderate carbonation. Very smooth a flavoursome. Quite rich.

Fra gravity-cask på St Albans Beer & Cider festival 25 Sep 14. Svart. 0 skum. Brukbar kaffe-aroma. Smaken er også kun kaffe. Smaken holder seg og blir tørrere etter hvert.

Gravicask, shared with Finn at St Albans Beer Festival. Deep black coloured body with a rustic shade. Filmy tan-coloured head. Brown malty nose. Taste of oatmeal mixed with brown malts. Roasted bitterness to the finish. Satisfying (25.09.2014).

(Cask at Kitty’s, 20140124) The beer poured black. Its head was small, dense, lightly brown and it lasted long. Aroma had burnt malts, coffee and chocolate. Palate was medium bodied with low carbonation. Flavours were hops, sweetness, burnt malts and bitterness. Aftertaste was burnt and bitter. A nicely done brew with balanced burtness.

Cask @ Bedford Arms, Bedford. Incredibly dark brown. Considerable tan head with dissipates quickly. Considerable lacing. Scent of coffee, chocolate and rich tea biscuit. Taste is not what I expected: sweet/sour fading to bitter, then a dry finish. Unfortunate aftertaste knocks this down about 0.5. All in all good though, like an Irish stout, full bodied, complex and assertive.

Cask at The Anchor, Digbeth, Birmingham. Poured a deep mahogany with a frothy light tan head. The aroma is weak roast. The flavour is weak bitter with a watery hop spice palate. Medium bodied with flat carbonation. Looked a whole lot better than it tasted.

Cask at the Alexandra Arms during my Super Crawl around Cambridge (I think it was the Alexandra, at least). Pours clear, red-brown with a lingering, tan cream cap. Sweet milk chocolate nose. Light sweet flavor with mellow roast, light dirt, char, milk chocolate, some tangy dark fruits. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation. Faint dryness at the end, with lightly chalky dark malts, further milk chocolate, subtle roast. OK.
