Clear deep amber colour, tall frothy off-white head, half-way lasting. Aroma toasted malts, toffee, dried dark fruits, brown sugar, maple syrup. Flavour medium sweet and bitter, toasted malts, toffee, faint fruits. Malty bittersweet finish, resinous hops, spicy notes, very nice.

500ml Bottle: BBD end of Feb 14, poured into an ’Old Speckled Hen’ badged vase shaped pint glass at home on 14th Jan 14. Looked good, a full but thin covering on top of a ruby/mahogany body, clear and bright. Very fruity nose with a sweet front. The taste is also sweet and fruity, with some chocolate notes in the flavours too. The malts rule this beer from start to finish with the hops hidden below the surface keeping the sweetness in check. Good body depth and a thoroughly enjoyable brew.

Cask at the Assembly Rooms, Solihull. Poured a clear dark reddish brown with a thick tan head and broken lace. The aroma is malty and a little alcoholic. The flavour is uber malty too. It’s like an alcoholic Ovaltine. You could almost chew this beer! The malty flavour is complimented by some nice hoppy bitterness on the palate and in the aftertaste. It’s a lovely rich, thick and very satisfying ale.

500ml bottle - Nice looking red body, steady white head, loses it after a while but not bad. Nose of sticky caramel, malts and toffee. Syrupy palate, well rounded full bodied spicy marmalade taste, rich fruits and a bitter-sweet ending. Quite good, and one I’d have again.

Fine winter ale, ruby copper in colour and a great texture that allows the bitter to slip down the palate. Has the lightest of fruit aromas and some is evident in its flavour but there’s plenty of toffee in here too.

Cask at the Old Gaolhouse (JDW), Winchester. A rather boring bitter with a hint of spice. Deep amber, with a loose cream head; a fruity aroma; a fruity toffee taste; and a gentle bitterness.
