This is dark ruby ale is based on a Victorian recipe for mild ale - from the days when ’mild’ was not synonymous with low alcohol and a lack of flavour. Pale, crystal and black malts give the rich, malty flavour,
with Fuggles hops providing a relatively low 34 IBUs of bitterness,
plus some hop aroma.

500ml bottle [courtesy of Grumbo - thank you very much!]. Quasi black colour with average to huge, fluffy, moderately lasting, minimally lacing, beige head. Floral hoppy and toasty, dark malty aroma, hints of viola petals, a touch of liquorice, pumpernickel. Taste is roasty dark malty and slightly bitter, floral hoppy, hints of liquorice, dark chocolate, pumpernickel, herbal spicy interludes; lasting bitter finish. Slightly oily texture, creamy and minimally sticky palate. Very nice.

Bottle. Jug & Bottle, Bubwith, East Yorkshire. 6.5%. Hazy, dark chestnut brown. Thin, dense, sticky, light tan head. Nose has ripe stone fruit. Dried dates. Treacle. Bonfire toffee. Soft, herbal, hop notes. Very light, sweet smoke. Smells great. Taste has chewy, date fruit sweetness. Turns light, earthy, stone fruit bitter. Smooth, rich mouthfeel. Soft carbonation. More of the stone fruit bitterness on the finish, with the chewy sweetness remaining throughout. Crystal malt and Fuggles hops. Who’d have thought it! Very impressive. Liked this a lot.
