Bottle shared @ Borefts Pre-tasting. Best before August 1996! Clear autumnal red-brown color, virtually no head. Aroma is very oxidised, very much liquor in this. Taste malts, again liquor, port (?), sweet caramelised sugar, vanilla. Not great, but quite interesting.

1.5 l bottle from ’Wijnhandel Bosch’, best before 1996, shared at Not THT. Clear, ruby with a medium large, frothy, slowly diminishing, beige head. Sweetish-malty, slightly fruity and oxidized aroma of caramel, red fruits, some port, hints of oak, leather and cardboard. Sweetish-malty, slightly fruity and oxidized taste of caramel, dark red fruits, port and some oak, followed by a medium long, slightly bitter, a bit warming-alcoholic finish. Medium body, slightly oily mouthfeel, almost flat. Way better than expected, also still decently carbonated, nice surprise!

20 year old magnum shared, thanks! Clear mahogany with bubbly beige head. Caramel, sherry, light oxidized notes though way less than I expected. Light spices, marzipan, cherries. Medium sweet and light bitter. Medium bodied with slick feel and a bit low carbonation.

Magnum shared vintage 1996. Thin off white head. Hazy burgundy pour. A little sweet still. Pretty good. Strangely enough, I used to drink this 20 years ago in Stockholm on tap in an Irish bar owned by a Dutch guy

Huge bottle courtesy of Zlotta at Not THT tasting. Best before 1996. Clear dark chestnut, light tan head. Sweet toasted malts. Woody, nutty, caramel, fudge, rye bread, roastiness. 20 year old bottle shared at tasting, thanks to Zlotta. Dark caramel with a tan head. Sherry, dried fruit, a bit of whiskey, coffee, some chocolate. Smooth texture, well balanced, the taste notes seem faded, but quite good for a best before 1996.

30cl Bottle, BB August ’96. I know this hasn’t been kept under the best condition, but wanted to give it a try anyway. Pours clear dark brown with no head. Aroma of Madeira wine and chocolate, dark malts. Flavour is sweet, raisins, Port and Madeira wine, cola, chocolate, fairly oxidized, light plastic notes, sweet and light sour finish, just a bit of fizzy carbonation left. Thin mouthfeel. Fun to try.

(Fairly aged sample)Very dark brown, rather surprisingly white foam, fast dissipated. Faint aroma's of raisins and rum ("rumbonen", rum filled chocolates). After some time, more fruitlike aromas as plums or other dark fruit, always faint. Even fainter impressions of toilet soap and dark bread. If it weren't for the mouthfeel, I'd praise this beer for nice vanilla, strawberry, woody and spicey gingerbread notes, and some less pleasing buttermilk ones. But... very thin mouthfeel. THE weak spot of Grolsch. Yes, this beer is a bit aged, and it has suffered - however not oxydised. But "Wintervorst" is definitely one of Grolsch' really good beers.

Bottled, 2001 vintage. Very dark ruby, brief head. Fruity with notes of plums. Spicy and malty with bold, filling mouthfeel. Balanced sweetness. Surprisingly good to be a Grolsch.
