Every year we age a special batch of our much-loved Russian Imperial Stout in Bourbon barrels. The depth, intensity, and complexity of the flavor profile of this special release, like its predecessors, make it a worthy tribute to Old Rasputin. This year, two variants of barrel aged Old Rasputin were produced -- one in rye whiskey barrels, and the other in wheat whiskey barrels.

Stout Aged in Rye Whiskey Barrels. First release XVIII (2015).

Aroma of whiskey, coffee and sweet, dark fruit. Sweet, boozy flavor, alcohol burn, roasted malt aftertaste, slight coffee ground bitterness of a stout to finish. A hint of spicy flavor. Similar flavor to barleywine.

(Bottle) Black colour with lasting, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of dark chocolate, coffee, oak wood, vanilla, rye whiskey, liquorice, a touch of mint and herbs. Malty, roasted taste with chocolate, coffee, crisp-bread, liquorice, mint, oak wood, vanilla, whiskey and a balanced roasty bitterness in the finish. Full body, with a certain sweetness. Really tasty and well balanced with a gentle wood ageing and a slighly herbal/minty touch. Great beer!

Bottle from Brewer's Haven, XXIII release. Nearly black pour with a nice tan head. Delectable aroma is sweet with chocolate and barrel notes, light roast. Tastes sweet with a light roast and modest barrel notes. About midway through I can pick up a little rye in the finish. Solid depth and layers of flavor, this is a winner.

Over-aged? Not aged enough? No clue how old this pint is, but I am sure it’s over-oaked. Woody bitterness and whiskey mix with roast and a rusty salinity. The barrel dominates. Not all that enjoyable.
