A massive 16.5% abv Barleywine that’s been sleeping in Elijah Craig barrels for the last 15 months. We woke this sleeping brute and fed it “mounds” of cacao, almonds and coconut. Resulting in a absolute beast of a Barleywine! Collaboration with our family at Mason Ale Works.

16 oz. can, pours a deep dark brown / near-black with a small beige head. Aroma is massive, with lots of sweet almond, coconut, bourbon barrels, and vanilla. Flavour is surprisingly not that sweet for what it is; there's plenty of booze, lots of cocoa, almond liqueur, and a touch of coconut; then the bourbon barrels kick in, imparting gentle vanilla. The adjuncts aren't all that noticeable individually, but sort of meld together in a cohesive way. Much smoother than I expected for a 16.5% barleywine; the booze isn't that noticeable. It's certainly tasty, but maybe a tad underwhelming given the expectation. The complexity and cohesion just isn't quite up to snuff. Overall, very good.

Dark brown colour. Aroma of malt, vanilla, almonds. Full body, it's sweet but not too thick; bourbon, some roasted malt, chocolate, coconut. Good barrel, modest Barley Wine.

16oz on the Alouette campground shared with Alex on our campsite. Appearance: brown with a beige head. Aroma: lots of chocolate with some bourbon and coconut. Taste: along the same lines, really lots of chocolate, maybe even a bit on the artificial side because it was a bit too much of it 😁 Overall: good one, a bit more pleasant than BA Baracus.
