Pizza Pal(e)

From Backlog. 0,3 litre Can, at PizzaExpress, Camden, London. Golden with white head. Malts, hops, yeast, Citrus, some bitterness.

330ml can. Pours pale gold with a medium head. Aroma is grassy lemon and pissy Citra.  Taste has grassy lemon to start with a grassy lemon and Citra finish.

Can at Pizza Express, Chertsey. Aroma is malty, vaguely citrus l. Clear gold. Thin foamy translucent white head. Medium bitter. Light resin and spice. Underlying malts and veg. Light. Thin. Fizzy carbonation. Long dry finish. Snooze of a Pale.

Can at Pizza Express, Morningside. Pours clear golden with a thick white head. Aromas of light citrus and pale malt. Taste is light biscuit, bitter hop, grapefruit. Easy drinking.

[33cl can at Pizza Express, Sunningdale.] A hazy orange coloured pour with an immediately disappearing white head, leaving a very flat appearance; light fruity aroma with some orange and pineapple; and a similar flavour with a rather watery body. Didn't stand up to a spicy pizza,but perhaps just the thing to go with an Hawaiian?

Tastes good initially but the taste seemed to get lost a bit with the pizza. It's very inoffensive and easy drinking which is probably the intention. It claims to be a West coast IPA but doesn't have any real bitterness.

Can at Pizza Express, High Wycombe. Not my choice to come here - I'm not a fan of Pizza Express. I mean, I prefer to support independent business rather than chains anyway, but I feel Pizza Express is particularly overpriced for its distinctly average food served in their bland restaurants with no atmosphere. Fortunately this beer made it rather more tolerable than usual, despite the ugly Pudsey Bear design can. It's bronzey-gold with a lasting white head and a soft mouthfeel with a gentle to moderate fizz. There's mellow notes of orange and lemon, with a touch of tropical fruit and fresh hop against a clean malt background. It's not particularly punchy or flavoursome or anything, but it's very drinkable and more-ish and somehow more enjoyable than it has any right to be. They've not only achieved their aim of it being a good beer to have with dinner, but they've actually created a really good session pale. In fact, this beer may be the one good thing to have come out of Pizza Express (although I suspect they had little to do with the actual brewing, so congratulations go to Meantime instead).

Can at Pizza Express Union Street. It pours clear golden with a sturdy white cap. The aroma is quite fresh... a hit of fresh pine, twist of citrus, lemon, grapefruit and the like and some clean malt. The taste is dry, restrained bitterness, pretty clean malt base, touch of bread, grapefruit, citrus peel and some piney notes with a drying finish. Average body and moderate, foamy carbonation. Not a huge amount going on, but it's quenching and goes well with the pizza.
