Barrel Aged Imperial Winter Ale

This year’s release of Double Barrel B-Bomb rests for one year in Heaven Hill bourbon barrels and then ages for another year in Woodford Reserve bourbon barrels. Double Barrel B-Bomb achieves distinct oak, cacao, leather, toffee, and dark coffee notes from its extended barrel aging and barrel blending. Each barrel contributes a different note, and combining each barrel to create a coherent tone is a distinct art and true pleasure. Please do enjoy this unique barrel-aged ale today but know that Double Barrel B-Bomb will age gracefully for at least another 5 years. Don’t Be Afraid To Be Doubly Abominable.

Down & Dirty: 2-Row Pale, Crystal-120, Munich, Roast Barley, Carafa-2, and Chocolate malts with Columbus, Willamette, and US Goldings hops

375ml (thx, Josh!) shared with Alex @ Ryan's deck enjoying a finally arrived warm days. 2023 release.
Aroma: nice American oak, fruity, some nice sophisticated sweetness, noticeable kinda smoky spirit.
Taste: along the same lines, on the thin side for almost 16% ABV. Probably because of that spirit is even more noticeable. It is quite smooth, though, and sophisticated.
Overall: pretty good, but I expected a little bit more from it.

Poured from 375mL bottle (2023 release). Dark brown with small beige head. Bourbon, oak, leather, dark sugars, boozy, thinner-medium body, blends nicely together.

375mL bottle. Pours black with minimal head. Aroma has excellent bourbon barrel up front with solid caramel and brown sugar malt underneath. Flavour has strong bourbon barrel with good roast underneath, molasses. Really nice barrel-aged ale with a complex profile.

375mL bottle, pours a deep dark brown / near-black with a small brown head. Aroma is exquisite, with intense bourbon barrels, a bit of smoky whiskey, all over a real nice dark malt base. Flavour is complex as hell, with intense bourbon barrels, somewhat smoky whiskey, dark sugars, molasses, and plenty of alcohol. Wonderful barrel character, which dominates the flavour profile. Lovely.

Bottle, Oct 2024 Dark brown. Not much head. The aroma has fairly assertive barrel character, but lots of dark sugars. On the palate, the sugars are bigger, which balances out the alcohol/bourbon hit quite a bit. That allows the layers of dark malt and caramelized sugars to shine. Certainly there's a lot of alcohol on this, but it's got a wonderful character and balance. 8 4 9 4 18 = 4.3 Draught @ the brewery, Dec 2023 Dark brown. Rich aroma, lots of sticky sugars, dark fruits, bit of alcohol. Diving right in, it's boozy, refined, gorgeous barrel character. More sticky sugars, charred fruit, toffee, it's layered, complex. Just excellent stuff. 9 4 8 4 18 = 4.3
