Medium body. Lange afdronk met kruiden, geroosterde mout, gemiddeld bitter.

16 oz. can. Black, with a big, foamy, tan head. The nose is dusty coffee, cinnamon, vanilla, tobacco, pecan, and black strap molasses. Dry and earthy, with a bracing, dull bitterness. Heavy, sticky, and quite astringent. Aggressive and harsh, but quality and interesting.

On tap at brewery. Pours opaque dark brown with thin beige head. Aroma has lots of bourbon, cinnamon, toasty malts. Flavour has smooth chocolate, cinnamon, vanilla. Very nice.

Can sample at Fremont, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma has plenty of bourbon barrel, cinnamon, a touch of nutmeg, and cocoa. Flavour is rich, with plenty of cinnamon and nutmeg upfront, followed by bourbon barrels, cocoa, and medium roast. Spice Wars was never my favourite variant of of their BA stout, but this is done well.

Limited release (2024 version), US Pint can. Drank on 3rd July 2024 while on holiday in California, poured (twice) into an old 'Corsendonk' stemmed tulip glass at my daughters place. Jet black with a huge brown head that falls away to leave a wisp and collar. Nice boozy blend of Stout and Porter style dark malty beers, the Bourbon Barrel Aging gives an extra spiciness and more 'booze'. Nutty leather flavours, interesting and intriguing. This is a beer to be sipped in front of an open fire at midnight on a cold day, but I really enjoyed it at 5 O'clock in the afternoon with the sun beating down outside

Pint can. Black with a huge foamy beige head that has good retention. The aroma is relatively mild with some licorice, allspice and cloves. The taste is dominated by the spices; clove, allspice, ginger, and perhaps some cinnamon. The spices are deftly applied, and not overbearing, thus the cocoa porter base to plays an effective role in the body. The bitterness is mild with a black walnut type of bitter effect. The palate is full and creamy with soft carbonation. Finishes long with lingering spiced walnuts. Overall: Decent beer, that is to say I loved it. This is spiced the way one of those abominable pumpkin beers should be spiced. Paired superbly with some Swiss Beemster cheese.

Pint can - black pour with a tan lace - flavor is very cinnamon forward, but there is a lot of complexity behind it - mild oaky tannins, coffee, red wine, prune, chocolate, coconut - sweet, but with a light balancing acidity on the tail end - I look forward to these iterations every year.
