Home Port is one of our recipemaker Willför’s first home brewing recipes, which pretty much has stuck in the same format since the beginning. To the style the beer is an old school British Porter, where the malts do most of the talking and the bitterness remains quite low, unlike the more modern porters. In the beginning the beer was meant for chill down moments after heavy days at work, but we have also figured out this one goes really well with the typical Finnish and Swedish Christmas food tables, but also with the Swedish traditional Porterstek (porter steak).

(Bottle, 0.33 l - batch 002 - BB 11-05-18, from Pien, 20180503) The beer poured black. Its head was medium sized and lightly brown. Aroma had burnt malts, chocolate and coffee. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were burnt malts, spiciness, ash, coffee and bitterness. Aftertaste was spicy, burnt and bitter. A bit weird but nevertheless tasty burnt brew.

330ml bottle from Pien. BBE 11.05.18, Batch #2. Pours pitch black with a smooth head. Aroma of roasty malts, coffee, licorice, chocolate and salmiakki. Taste is smooth, earthy and slightly roasty with some licorice, salmiakki, hints of burnt notes and very dark chocolate. Finish is smooth and slightly sweetish with some earthiness, hints of burnt malts, roastiness and salty licorice. Okay, quite smooth porter with some licorice notes.

Smell of coffee, licorice. Black colour, beige head. Aroma of licorice, coffee, some tar. Medium sweet, mildly bitter. Flat carbon, ashy palate. Decent but non-challenging porter.

33 cl bottle @ Timo A, BBE 5.3.2018
Aroma has cocoa and dark chocolate. A bit candy-like. Palate is somewhat low on CO2 - but not disturbingly low. Flavour has cocoa, soy sauce, some pot coffee and ash. Also mild salty licorice tones. Some grapefruity and nettle like hops occur after some sips. I like the deep roastiness here, without the salty soy notes this could be better.
7-3-7-3-13 33 cl bottle @ Armonkallio
Aroma has coffee and chocolate tones. Flavour has coffee, chocolate and pot coffee. Also mild ashy notes. A lot better than the previous bottle. Cheers, Pade! 9-3-7-3-14=3.6

Bottle at PWF. Dark brown colour, small beige head. Toasted, chocolaty, a bit coffeish. Medium-bodied. Coffeish, toasted, a bit ashy. Clean, nice lingering toastyness in the aftertaste. Good.
