Strong citrus nose. Hazy pale golden colour, tall frothy macropore white head, good retention, good lacing. Pale malt, orange, tangerine, passion fruit, mango, yeast. Juicy taste, medium sweet and bitter, malty, tangerine, grapefruit, orange peel, star fruit, pine resin, yeasty notes. Lingering dry fruity bittersweet aftertaste, orange pith, chalky notes, medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation, very good.

American style IPA made in Switzerland, longneck bottle from Geers in Oostakker close to Ghent. Towering high, very foamy, egg-white, thickly plaster-like lacing, very stable head, hazy straw blonde robe with warm ‘old gold’ hue and tiny dots of yeast here and there, turning misty with sediment. Aroma of lime blossoms, orange water, stewing shallot, soapy starfruit, diesel, herb cheese, yellow curry powder, white pepper. Fruity onset, lime, starfruit and sweet lychee impressions, lively but refined carbonation, smooth white-bready and bread-crumb-like malty middle, pleasantly powdery also due to a bready yeast effect, some esters and phenols but – fortunately – the hops prevail gloriously, with grapefruity and very light mango-like effects retronasally but most of all, as was the intention, a peppery, eventually quinine-like rooty bitterness, lingering for a long time yet not completely blocking the juicy fruity and malty sweetish aspects from the onset. In all, indeed quite old school, yet a bit more aromatic than a classic West Coast IPA would be and definitely a tad more yeasty as well; closer to a ‘Belgian IPA’ perhaps, but in any case a well-made, very enjoyable and highly drinkable beer.

Bottle picked up from Dranken Geers, Oostakker nr Gent, Belgie and consumed at home, Attenkirchen, Bavaria, Sunday 20th April whilst making Saffron and Lemon Chicken and also Saffron and Rosemary Chicken and listening to Craig Charles Funk and Soul on 6 Music. Pours Cloudy gold with a white head, a little bit of sediment on the pour and in suspension. Nice busy carbonation, bitterness comes through. Some sweetness, fruity with a smidgen of mango, a little furry pineapple. Good
