  Porter - Imperial Baltic Special
Score
7.58

Rich and smooth Baltic Porter brewed with coconut, vanilla, and cardamom.

Taste: The taste of a smooth and creamy vanilla milkshake combines with the chocolate malt character before the palate is flooded with oily coconut and sweet oats. Finally cardamon comes through, balanced by a delicate spiciness from the hops - the body transporting you to winter nights surrounded by family.

Bottle from Speciaalbierpakket. Aroma is heavy on the coconut with vanilla, dark malt, caramel, dark chocolate, cardamom, fruity notes, liquorice, a touch of coffee and some roast. Flavour is medium sweet and light bitter. Body is medium to full, dangerously drinkable. Lovely coconut and vanilla Porter, chewy and rich.

Bottled (Alko Keskusta, Vaasa).Pitch black colour, big reddish brown foamy head, which leaves a thick lace. Aroma is cardamom, chocolate and some roasted notes. Flavour is very ashy, some spices and very mild vanilla notes. Pleasant sipper.

A deep dark porter with a thin mocha head. In aroma, nice chocolate malt with dark fruits, licorice, alcohol warmth, very nice. In mouth, loads of coconut, vanilla, alcohol warmth, very nice and smooth. On tap at Saint Bock.

Tap from Cirkus, Stavanger. Black body with a nice, dense brown head. Aroma of dark malt, coffee, cardamom and coconut. Taste is sweet, smooth dark malt, cardamom, coconut, hint of vanilla and warming alcohol. Fine body and long lasting aftertaste. A sweet porter in the pastry landscape, but more natural and balanced, still something I cannot have too much of but nice for a small glass.

Rating #8002, Beer #10 of 17 (8 beers on either side of #8000 plus the magic 8000th itself) Super dark, almost pitch black coloured body with a very small, single centimetre tall off-white and tan head. Aroma of toasted coconut, light molasses, bunches of vanilla, roasted malt, oak, coffee, chocolate and lactose, all with a deep bitter bite towards the end from the alcohol and all the malts. Medium to Full-bodied; Rich toasted coconut flavours coming through with a hint of curry powder, roatsed oatmeal and earthy nuts with a deep lactose sweetness and a bunch of double cream, alcohol and grain, but the molasses sweetness on the end adds another layer. Aftertaste is rich and super deep with a lot of malty, nutty, earthy, roasty and slightly savoury flavours coming through such as some soy sauce, light mushrooms and umami notes, but the oatmeal and chocolate really capture the finish with some of the toasted coconuts for complexity and depth, and the lingering alcohol at the finish, but goes down relatively smoothly. Overall, a very nice beer with a ton of flavours, yet relatively smooth-drinking, but the toasted coconuts and lactose are the nicest in this one with a very creamy texture and a taste of almost the tropics, although it's Estonia and it's a super deep Porter that wouldn't be as pleasant in the sun. This was the tenth beer of my 8000th celebration, the second on the 'other side' of 8000, but it was a very nice option and perhaps worthy of a celebratory beer itself! I sampled this 33 cL bottle, purchased from Knightly Spirits in Orlando (Orange Blossom Trail), Florida on 05-May-2018 for US$5,69 sampled at my house in Washington on 29-April-2020, almost exactly two years after purchase, as Beer #10 of the 8000th Beer Celebration!
