Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous Black IPA Aged in Rye Whiskey Barrels & Bourbon Barrels
Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous Black IPA practically named itself. The perfect melding of dark malts with a downright indecent amount of hops forges a complex flavor profile of assertive dark roastiness and big, bright hop notes for a singularly sublime experience.
Small Batch Brewer Cecil Menasco thought it would be an ingenious experiment to age our dark and deeply hopped Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous Black IPA in rye whiskey barrels…and he was right. This time our small batch crew, never a self-satisfied bunch, added bourbon barrels. The result is transcendent: perfectly balanced dark chocolate, oak, dried fruit and citrus tones. As it warms, the spicy rye and sweet bourbon barrel notes complete this masterful transformation.

2016 Batch 02. Pours dark cola into a snifter. Bubbly mocha head with medium retention recedes to mottle surface. Sweet pit fruit, oxidation and bourbon aromas. Medium bodied with dark chocolate covered cherries, chocolate orange, rum-soaked raisin brown bread and molasses upfront turning to a bitter, sour earth finish. A bit too much age on this one...

Bottle, 02. Light oxidized, doughy chocolate, wood, doughy bourbon , some herbs. Dark brown, medium body, mellow, nose ce hop aromatics on roast still, doughy chocolate bun finish. Fun.

Aroma of dark fruits, citrus, vanilla, chocolate, almonds, oak. Intensive and complex. Taste of chocolate, vanilla, dried fruits, wood, citrus, almonds. Excellent barrel. I thought it would be rather imperial stout but it's definietely Black ipa. Medium bitterness. Excellent one.

Draft at Stone RVA. Barrel aged CDA? Say what? Near black pour, wispy beige head. Aroma is woody and sweet, and then the booze hits. Taste brings the boozy strength up front, light roast, brown sugar, char, bitterness then alcohol heat. Nice!

Backlog. Pours black and smells of dark roast malt, bourbon, chocolate, and resin. The intense flavor is moderately bitter with resinous hops, roast malt, bourbon, and chocolate in a full bodied brew that leaves a long, roasty finish. Excellent.
