Draught at the brewery, 4/8/17.
Copper, amber and auburn hues comprise this lightly hazy body topped by a frothy, beige head with moderate-to-moderately low retention.
The nose is indeed juicy and tropical with tons of melon, peach, pineapple and papaya. Some pine is certainly mixed in there as well, though there seems to be a fair enough malt backbone behind it, adding light caramel and lots of honey, to balance it. Spicy, leafy, dank and fruity notes all converge on quite a focused hop finish that could still use just a bit less pine sap, despite all of the intense tropicality here. Alcohol is well-concealed and there are no flaws noted.
Very juicy and quite malty in the mouth, though drying out considerably as it progresses to the finish. While there’s a lot of fun pineapple and mango, with a soft, caramel-honey-like maltiness providing a mostly soft texture, it develops a lot of melon, papaya and dry pineapple that transition in to pine and sourdough-like resin. Tight, engaging, nearly-creamy carbonation is excellent in concert with the maltiness, but these guys just need to relax on the bitterness. Or maybe they just like really bitter, resinous IPA/Ls.
