Good clarity, perhaps some chill haze, in this auburn-amber-colored beer. Dark butter-colored head atop recedes quickly to a ring.
No signs of the barrel in the nose. Maybe if you're stretching there's a bit of spice? But this definitely was at least a G3 (generation 3) barrel if not more. Otherwise, the hops are mild, fruity, lightly citric with a bit of spice, light grapefruit and green, vegetal character. Specialty malts are noteable but not overdone, with nuts, bread and very minor sweetness. No alcohol or flaw.
In the mouth it's confoundingly lacking in any barrel character and past that, pretty lacking on hops. Even the malt is a bit on the thin/light side, with light bread, honey, nuts and mild grains creating a light body, moderately-soft texture and mild sweetness. Light, somewhat loose carbonation and no alcohol or flaw. Competent and drinkable, but very much not what you'd expect.

From notes, taster at the source pours dark reddish brown with a off white head. Aroma is rye, light oak, and caramel. Taste is caramel, toffee, light oak, mild hop notes. Interesting application.

6 oz. draft at the brewery. Murky reddish color. Aroma is mild oak, toffee and spicy rye. The flavor of the base red rye in combination with the High West whiskey makes this a rich and spicy rye experience. Oak tannins, caramel, and a very light hop profile of the base is still noticed. Medium in body with an interesting depth of flavor.
