A sceptre is something normally reserved for the likes of royalty, but we all carry a sceptre – something that makes us special. For this India Pale Lager we combine Pilsner, Vienna and Caramalts with a huge whack of hops to make what we call a Special Lager Beer.

Can from Lupe Pintos. Hazy golden body with a white head. Low carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of mint, white grape and green pepper. Flavour of basil and grass. Medium body with a smooth mouthfeel. Soft fizz. Grassy and hoppy. Very nice.

440ml can from Micro Beer Crate online. Cloudy gold with moderate sized foamy head, nice retention. Aroma of grains, caramel, stone fruits, grass. Taste is clean pale malts, light cereal, some citrus and apricot. Light to medium bodied, soft carbonation with pillowy mouthfeel. Very good.

On tap at The Green Goddess, Blackheath Royal Standard. Black pour with a beige head. Sweet malty nose, toffee, Horlicks, cappuccino, milk chocolate, touch of dark fruits. Taste is chocolate toffee, nuts, cappuccino, more Horlicks. Malty sweet with a light bitterness coming through in the back end. Interesting brew.

(Draught at Mother Kelly's Vauxhall, London, 21 May 2023) Hazy dark golden colour with lasting, white head. Malty, hoppy nose with bread, citrus and herbal hops. Malty, hoppy taste with notes of bread, grain, citrus, grass and a gentle grassy bitterness. Medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Harmonious and well balanced. Nice one.

440ml can. Poured a clear golden colour with a short-lived, fizzy white head. The aroma is malt, light citrus hops. The flavour is moderate to light bitter and sweet, with a light, crisp, malt, herbal, light dank, light citrus, woody hop bitter palate. Medium to light bodied with average carbonation.

Bottled@Bishops Arms Vasagatan, Stockholm. Black colour, small brown head. Aroma is roasted malts, liquorice and some wooden and toasted notes. Flavour is fruity, floral, roasted and toffeeish notes. Quite mellow and nice.

Clear golden colour with thin head. Aroma and flavour have light citrus notes. Pale malt sweetness. Touch of bitterness in the finish. Nice balance.

Dorée pâle, col épais crémeux blanc-cassé.
Arôme est frais houblonné avec un effluve malté plus dominant - pâle. Fleuri avec un léger fleuri assez modeste.
Palais est malté pâle et pils, rondeur de bouche avec un côté plus pale ale que IPL. Petite sécheresse en fin de bouche, finement fleuri et fruité - fruits à noyaux, pointe de résineux/poudreux sur la fin. Ce côté lager reste cependant plus en retrait.

Keg at Mash Paddle. Aroma combines liqourice, coffee and malts. Dark. Brown tinge. Creamy beige head. Flava matches aroma. Liqourice and coffee. Medium bitter with a tangy edge. Underlying molasses. Medium bodied. Creamy. Long finish. Yum.
