Our IPA is one of the first and remaining traditional East India Pale Ales of its kind. Mahogany in colour, the blend of roasted malts and whole leaf hops combine to produce a rich, fully-bodied, 4.8%, classic strong ale with hints of chocolate, roasted coffee and orange zest.

Cask at the Britannia, Marlow. Amber with a thick off-white head. Caramel dominates throughout this fairly sweet beer, with a little brown bread and (very) light lemon and floral hints. It’s got a good full, smooth mouthfeel, but as others have noted it’s a little bland and could do with some extra hoppage.

Cask in Nags Head Bishops Stortford. Aroma is a sharp, a little vinegar. Clean but colour with a solid head. Flavour is malty, very smooth, Korea pint of mild than an IPA.

Cask pint at The Nags Head, Covent Garden. Copper colour, moderate white head. Malty aroma, a hint of malt vinegar. Malty flavour, minimal hops, mild roasty notes in the finish. Certainly not an IPA by any stretch of the mind.

Has a soft malt aroma typical of a cheap ale. Okay brown body with little head. Flavour is mild malt with only a hint of hops. Medium finish. A largely forgettable IPA.

Cask-conditioned at the Seven Stars, Bristol 7/5/2013. Amber with a decent, off-white head. A fruity beer, with decent malts, some hedgerow hops and a decent, bitter finish. As others have noted, a straight down the middle beer.

Cask at the Nags Head, Covent Garden - 13/12/12. Dark amber with a thin white head that retains well. Nose carries light fruit tones, touch of hops, pale malt. Taste follows pretty unassuming and safe all round. Medium body, soft carb, sweet and bitter in the finish. Arriving at the classic ’whelmed’ formation: - 6-3-6-3-12 !
