De laatste Haarlemse brouwerijen, die begin 1900 nog actief waren, brouwden allen een extra stout. Jopen heeft deze bierstijl nieuw leven ingeblazen. De Nederlandse stout bevat tussen de 5 en 6% alcohol.

Can from Beer 52 – drank at home. Pours almost balck with a large but transient frothy beige head. There’s roasted malts and coffee in the aroma. In the mouth the initial sensation is bitter coffee grounds combined with molasses, but this soon wears off to be replaced by chocolate and milky coffee sweetness. Some bitterness in the finish though. This is excellent.

[33cl can from Beer52] An opaque peaty brown coloured pour with a tight beige head; smooth in the mouth with a light coffee taste to start; then a strong roasted grain bitterness; before a pleasantly toasty finish. A rather nice stout.

33cl bottle from Schipol. Dark brown pour, thin, creamy beige head. Aroma is roasty, bitter and dry. Taste brings a little chocolate to the dry roastiness, lingering bitterness, but taste finishes quickly. Seems a little thin.

Pours a very dark brown small slightly tan head. Aroma is dark malt, cacao, chocolate malt. Light to medium body. Flavour is malty, slightly sweet, chocolate malt, cacao, hint of lactose? Finish is medium dry, sweet, slightly bitter. Nice, easy dry stout

Bottle. Deep dark brown color. Soft roastaroma with hints of licorice and coffee. malty sweetish flavor with soft roasty milky and coffee notes. Somewhat watery mouthfeel. Nice and easy drinking stout.
