Deep rich amber and copper coloured body with a bright ruby tint when held up to the light, along with a smallish, single centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of oak, alcohol, apples, toffee, earth, caramel, pitted fruits, cedar and a bit of butterscotch - nice and robust throughout. Full-bodied; Deeply sweet with caramel, toffee, pit fruits and raisins all noticeable along with some smooth malt, a touch of oak and dry aged characteristics along with some light spices. Aftertaste shows the sweetness, some vanilla and grain and a bit of alcohol bitterness and pungency toward the end. Overall, a good ’fresh’ barleywine that I’m sampling without any additional aging, that shows a bit harsh, but fairly nice and respectable throughout. I sampled this thirty two ounce growler fill from Whole Foods in Fair Lakes (Fairfax), Virginia on 11-February-2017 for US$5,00...yes 32 ounces of a barley wine for $5 in Washington! Sampled at home in Washington a day later on 12-February-2017.

Oak and overripe orange nose. Cloudy amber, thick head that uniformly coats the glass. Overripe orange, marzipan at midpalate, amaretto in the finish. Dusty and oaky throughout. Booooozy, boozy.. Spectacular and tasty with nice aged character.

Draft at Mad Fox Brewing’s 3rd Annual Barleywine Festival. Poured a clear amber color with a small off-white, almost wispy head. Aroma was toffee notes, with some notes of caramel, hops, citrus notes. Lighter, a touch thinner body than I expected, alcohol is there - but not overtly boozy. Some fruit notes round this particular one out.
